  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Dark chrome trim

How long did it take for the trim pieces to arrive? My dealer allegedly ordered replacement trim for my vehicle, but that was almost 3 weeks ago.
About a week/week and a half, I just need to take it in to get them installed. Could also depend what region you are in? I’m in SoCal.

Las Vegas. Going to give the dealer a call to get an update. Thanks for the info!

All the dark chrome window trim turned into this sticky film substance. The dealer told me that there was a TSB prohibiting them from doing anything because the it has been found that owners were using corrosive cleaners which caused the problem. I had not... I removed it all with Goop Gone and now have shiny chrome window trim. It works just fine for me.

Little did I know that this was a known issue and there was a TSB out on it, until I discovered this forum/thread. I stopped by my local Genesis dealership this morning which is in the same town where I work and is actually only six miles away from where I live (different dealership than where I got the car last month). I went directly to the service manager and explained what the issue was. His response was, let me guess? Black chrome? Exactly. He said he was familiar with the issue and had someone in the shop a few weeks ago for the same thing. They immediately processed my car into the shop, got me a G70 loaner and sent me on my way. He said they would do the “Genesis required polish”, but knew it would do nothing to fix the issue. The new chrome pieces were ordered and he said they should be in by Friday as long as they don’t arrive damaged (apparently they have a history of issues with the parts company). Regardless, I’m extremely satisfied with how they’re handling this issue so far.

yup, they polished mine and it got lighter so they ordered the chrome same day. Did get your car back until the parts come in? If not, enjoy the loaner haha!

I have this same issue as with the OP. Back window trim looks dull and scratched severely almost like it is already baked from the sun and cracked. Will have to get an appointment for sure.

Nope, I’m stuck with the loaner until whenever. Free miles I guess, since mine is a lease. Anyone want to race? haha.

Anyone else having a problem with their dark chrome trim on the G70 sport? Mine on the back window area has completely discolored and looks scratched. I checked to see if there was a film on there, but there is nothing.

Back to the dealer I guess!
Hello, it’s my first time on this website and decided to sign up after I got my G70. Just wanted to ask, what options did the dealership give you when you went back to show them the chrome?

My dealership said that they put me on the Genesis “waiting list” to revise a TSB for the dark chrome trim. Stating that it may take some where between a week and couple of months, but I honestly don’t want to wait that long to get this fixed; since I just picked up the car 2 weeks ago.

My dealership took it in immediately to do the TSB polish and said they would replace the chrome if that didn’t work. 4/5 pieces were replaced within that week (they gave me a loaner G70), but one piece came damaged. I’m waiting for the replacement to come in, so I took my car back and told them to just give me a call when they receive it. I should have the final piece within a few days.

Update: I got the call from the dealership ten minutes after I wrote that. The last piece of new trim was added. Less than two weeks from the day I brought it to the dealership until I had all new trim around my windows. Not bad.

Thanks for the quick update! I guess I’ll have to go back and ask them to either replace both window trims, or try to polish it with one of their products (which I highly doubt it’ll work)

So, I am considering buying a very low mileage 2019 G70 Dynamic. (2250 miles). The thought of having to deal with trim pieces being replaced is somewhat of a turn off. It seems it will eventually happen to everyone with the dark chrome trim. So I guess my question is,

Is Genesis still actively replacing the trim pieces under warranty, and if so, are the replacements doing the same thing?

Yes and yes for the most part. The best situation would do just do a chrome delete. I am getting my replacements installed tomorrow. If they go bad again, I'll just wrap them.

I just had mine replaced last week with no hesitation from my service manager to order parts. They didn't try to polish or whatever other people have mentioned on here...he didn't even look at my car. Parts came in a few days after ordering and got them replaced.

That's reassuring to hear then. I really like the car, and would like to get it, but the whole trim pieces constantly being an issue is concerning.

My replacements are going out again. sigh.

Not in th mood to deal with Genesis today, any ideas o n how to prevent this from happening? Would Wrapping them before the were installed help?

I just saw a post on the facebook group about flitz metal polish. Looks like good results from the pics, but a little hard to tell. I've used flitz on firearms and other stuff and its good stuff.
That said, it's not a preventative, more a fix after the fact.

How long did it take the replacements to start deteriorating and how long did it take the dealer to replace the first ones?

My 2021 G70 came off the showroom floor with the dark chrome trim around the windows already looking bad. Got a due bill for them to be replaced. Service guy called and said Genesis wants them to try buffing and polishing. Taking it in this Monday. We'll see how this goes. 🤨🤞

It won't work. All buffing and polishing will do is remove the "dark" from the trim, resulting in "chrome" trim. Don't accept it. Make them replace it.

Yeah that's what I've gathered from the other posts I've seen. Believe me if it comes out not looking right they will be replacing it. I just wish they would have gone that route to start with. All they've done is delayed the inevitable. I have two other items as well they have to fix. One being the rear bumper applique has a gouge in it so they are replacing that and one of the wheels had a chip in the finish that they are going to "repair". I will make it clear to the service manager when I take it in that I'm expecting the trim ultimately to be replaced and the wheel to be replaced. I'm not going to allow them to just color fill the chip.
