  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a bad rear hub bearing on my 2011 4.6 sedan. Anyone replaced one before? Dealer wants $700, but was going to do myself if not too bad.

Ended up letting dealer replace as the oem part was almost $500 and I didn’t want a cheap Chinese part put on. Labor was relatively cheap ($200).

Yikes! Rock auto has them listed for $40 to $100 or so I think. $500 sounds like a lot even for OEM. Labor doesn't sound too bad for dealer work. Thanks for the quick reply. I took a long listen to my car this morning on an 80 mph drive. The sound is more thumping/vibration as opposed to a grinding noise. When I let off on the gas it gets worse. And when I brake it gets a little better. However even at low speeds there is a thumping sound. I'll have to take it into someone who can better diagnose then i can. I'm starting to think something with the drivetrain or maybe a bad caliper and not the wheel bearing.

I had my driveshaft replaced as I hunted for the problem ( covered under aftermarket warranty). Ended up not being the problem but the rubber driveshaft dampeners were tearing and would have needed replaced soon anyhow. May want to look at the driveshaft carrier bearing as well I hear it is not uncommon for them to go bad and start making noise. Let us know how it goes.

Wheel hub or cv joint

Well, y'all get a laugh out of this a hope. My car would shudder and shake more when I let of the gas. That was leading me to think driveshaft issues as opposed to the wheel bearing. I almost ordered a drive shaft flex coupler. Upon further investigation of that job, I decided that I didn't want to tackle it if that was it, so took it to my local -trusted- mechanic. He called me chuckling later telling me that I needed a new driveshaft for $1200. Oh, then he said it was really a loose wheel! I had a flat a couple of weeks ago and quickly swapped out the rear wheels for my winter wheels. I guess that I didn't tighten one of them enough.
What do you think? If anyone is familiar with Rock Auto's "blunders" or whatever it's called column, this might almost be a candidate.

--then there was a time many years ago when my car with air cleaner over the carb was clicking. I thought that it was the engine and that it was shot. I had not tightened the air cleaner both to prevent the rattle.

Hmm, maybe a sort of trend here.
Duhh
