  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So, my Genesis keeps stalling on me and I can't figure out why! Recently, I had my alternator replaced. A couple of days after the replacement, I was at a stop light when the car stalled on me. Started right back up. No warning lights, indicators, nothing I could notice that was wrong. A few days later, the car stalled again. This time, it seemed that the car did not want to turn over. When it did, the idle was running high, around 1000 rpm. Almost felt like the car was doing this in order to not stall again. Still, no warning lights, indicators... wtf! When I cycled the car off and then back on, it started up normal and back to the normal idle. This time decided to take it back to the shop. They checked the battery and alternator, and nothing. They had the car running for about 45 minutes and it never stalled. Everything they could check they said checked out fine.

Well, every so often my Genesis will stall. Totally random. Never any warning lights that I could notice before stalling, but after stalling, the oil and battery warning indicators are on the dash, but they go away after start up. Never loses power. Sometimes the car starts right back up with no issues, sometimes it has trouble starting and then it will keep a high idle, around 1000 rpm, until I turn it off. Only once has it started from cold into the high idle. The car runs great still, besides this, and I never had any problems before having to replace the alternator. Is it possible that something internally could have been damaged when the alternator failed? Any help or ideas as to why this is happening would be greatly appreciated.

I have a sneaking suspicion that something may be a bit off regarding the belt. Maybe the tension isn't enough? That's all I can think of. Have you disconnected the battery for 5 minutes or so to reset everything? Could just be a gremlin.

Maybe a good idea to check all the plumbing. A cracked hose / vaccum line could cause un-metered air enter or leave the system causing this kind of erratic behavior. A smoke machine could be of great help with this diagnosis.

Update:

No more than one hour after posting this message I hop in to go to work and that long cranking with a high idle is back. I kill the engine, wait for about 15-20 seconds, and start it again. Same long crank and high idle, but this time with a CEL, yes! I kind of wanted one to pop up to get some direction as to what could be wrong. Took it to the nearest auto shop to check the code. P0335, crankshaft position sensor. Reading this forum has given me some ideas and direction as in how to proceed. Thank you Qship and rmod for the ideas on what could have been wrong in the first place. I did have a more thorough inspection done at the time I had the alternator replaced and the shop stated that all looked good, including hoses and belts. The auto parts store I was at could not order the part, so now it will be a matter of tracking one down. Hopefully we are back to normal after replacing the part. 🤞

happened to me. I ended up fixing by getting an evap vapor canister replacement off of ebay. Get bosch or oem replacement only! The ones from autozine are crap, it made the stalling even worse.

I believe you have a bad crankshaft position sensor problem. I have had the same issue. Go ahead replace the sensor and you should be fine...

Did that resolve the stalling issues? And did anyone say it could possibly be the Ecu?
