If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello, I went to do an oil change couple days ago on my g80 Sport and the check engine light appears a day after. After checking with obd the code shows p0597 Thermostat Heater Control Circuit / Open. I have a suspicious that the guys at the dealer might of done something on purpose seeing that the lady drives the car and they thought I am dumb enough not to notice. But this is just my suspicion. Which I could be wrong. Google says that there is possibility of needing a thermostat replacement. I have about 42,000 miles on my G80, could that thermostat really fail thaaaaat fast?? Or it could be something that was done during oil change? My husband suggests I take it back and let them do the check up...Did anyone else had similar issues or maybe you can guide me in the right direction?

Here are the photos of the check engine light and the obd message

Seems kind of odd. Do you trust the people who did your oil change?
Kraig, thank you for your reply. This was only Hyundai dealer in my area where I live. Genesis was recommending to do service in either Genesis dealer or Hyundai. I got this car early September with only 38,000 mile on it. And when it was time to change the oil - I did. And now I am very concerned with this engine light. Do you suggest taking it back ?

Do you feel like they are shady? It could be just a coincidence? It sounds almost like you have an electronic thermostat. Two weeks ago my 15 5.0 Ultimate hit 40k. AT 39,999 Engine Light came on. P0441 code. Purge valve. I think it's just bad timing. Do you have warranty? Did you purchase CPO?

No, they didn't looked shady at all and rating on Google was 4.1. When I was there for oil change there were lots of other nice cars as well. I think if the place was bad people wouldn't take their nice cars there. Just my thoughts. I am just wondering why and how even an electronic thermostat could fail that fast. At only 42,000 miles. Strange. And yes, I should have warranty that I got along with the car. So it is included in my monthly car payment. Not sure it it's called CPO...

Whether you bought the car CPO or not, it's still covered under the basic 5yr 60k mile bumper to bumper warranty that is transferrable to the 2nd owner. There is no way to rig a thermostat go bad, so it's just a coincidence. Just take it back to the dealer, and let them fix it under warranty for you.

Anything mechanical will either wear out or break. Miles do not always matter. I've had appliance needing service within a couple of weeks, others lasting 25 years. Cars are the same.

Could the dealer have bumped and loosened a wire? Possible. Could it just happen the next day? Possible.
Rather than speculate, take it back and ask them to check it out. Much better change of finding out and getting it fixed, especially since you have a warranty.

Thank you for your reply, already called them to schedule for them to look at it.

Thank you for your reply, I understand. It was frustrating since I just got this vehicle and it is already bringing troubles.

NEW = Never Ever Worked:)

So I ended up not taking the car to the dealer. The engine light disappeared for a day and then appeared again and today it's gone again. Weird stuff honestly. Has anyone of you guys had something like that before???

You have a marginal failure. I would get it fixed, particularly since you have warranty to take care of it.

What is it?

Your thermostat has a small electric heat coil on it. The PCM uses that coil to vary the temperature that the thermostat opens at. This allows it to have the engine at a higher temperature for some conditions, and a lower one for others. If the heat coil fails, then the thermostat is always at the highest temperature, so this may not be so great for the engine. The P0597 code is saying that the heat coil is going open circuit or at least is at a higher resistance than it should be. Since it is coming and going, the resistance is either marginally high, or the connection is being broken and restored somewhere, either way, it is a marginal failure. These things almost never get better with time. Eventually, it will no longer be marginal, it will just be a complete continuous failure.

Wow, thanks for this detailed explanation. I really appreciate. I am taking my car today to get looked at. And yes, since it is still under warranty and it is a good idea to take care of it right away. Surprisingly the car runs good, nothing is overheats just this light strangely come on and off.

Thanks again to all of you!!!

If it’s under the warranty, they will fix the issue for free.. and thermostat should not fail in this range of mileage, hope the best for you, and by the way you have the most beautiful color ever on a G80S, keep it tidy 😍

Did you find the problem causing the code?

Yes, after diagnose last Fri they found the issue. They ordered a part and this week will fix it. The thermostat itself is fine, no need to fully replace it. And thank you for complimenting the color, they call it Polar Ice. I absolutely love it. We were lucky to find it :)

Yes, they did find the issue and will be fixing it this week. The thermostat itself was fine, just some small part was getting to hot. Thanks for checking:)
