  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

As the title states, does anyone know teh production numbers for teh R Spec? Any break down by color?

I've heard that each dealer got one. I've also heard that that is all of teh R Spec's there will be for 2012 MY. I've heard there were only about 1200. So I'm just wondering if anyone may have some insight or person behind the curtain that may have the actual numbers.

How exclusive are we with our R Spec?

I think all those stories are complete BS from dealers when they first came out, and dealers wanted top dollar for them. Hyundai is advertising the R-Spec fairly heavily (not necessarily on network TV) and they even have recently had an interactive infomercial on DirecTV for R-Spec (last weekend). I am sure that given reasonable notice, they can increase production.

I think there's more than 1200...no hard numbers to back that up, just a feeling from being part of this forum...seems like someone's joining almost everyday with a new R-spec. Looking at current stock (on Hyundai Circle), there's 20 R-specs within an hour's drive from me. Whoever told you each dealer only got 1 was lying. There were 2 at my dealer when I bought it, now 3 more in stock. Currently, Hub Hyundai in Houston has 6 sitting on their lot. Hub West has 4. If you only assume there are 20 in the whole state x 50 states = 1,000 R-specs, not counting those already sold or yet to be produced...we're not even halfway through the model year. Yes, Montana, North Dakota and Alaska may have fewer, but then you have states like California, Texas and Florida making up for those.

It is really not necessary to do any math (not that I question yours). Only an imbecile would pay for an advertising campaign to sell something that they don't have any of, and/or can't make a lot more of if demand increases.

Well of the 4 dealers I checked around here, each only had one.
1 black, 2 gray and 1 silver. Also I see them each day when they drive them off the ship here on the west coast to the receiving station. Lot's for regular Genesis rolling off the ship but I don't see any R Spec's. So was just wondering.

And low numbers really wouldn't supprise me. I had a '08 Pontiac G8 in Gray. They only build a little over 5k total in that color but there are like 5 of them in my town alone. That's 5 K total production and shipped to North America which includes Canada.

I Heard that the R-spec was to make up about 10% of the cars made that particular year.

My dealer STILL hasn't received any 2012's.... let alone 2012 R Spec's...

Advertising is one of the few subjects I know something about and, generally speaking, I agree you wouldn't support a product with limited distribution. But your blanket statement is wrong, as are most blanket statements. There are many instances where it is far from imbecilic to do so... it is done all the time...in many catagories....with the Genesis being an excellent example.

The role advertising plays for the Genesis as a halo for the Hyundai brand has been fully discussed on this forum and supporting the R-Spec is a logical extension of that strategy.

I would not infer volume expectations from advertising spending....at least in this case.

I just bought my 2012 r spec on 01-14-12. I did a lot of research on the car and checked basically all the upgrades from my 2011 4.6. Hyundai only made 1500 for the year and they are limited throughut. I'm in Texas and the hardest one to find is the Titanium Grey. I really wanted the same color as my 2011 but had to settle for black. I hope this helps you out .

Like most automakers, Hyundai probably set aside a certain production goal/% for the R-Spec; and if demand is seen to be greater than anticipated, they will adjust production down the line to meet demand (just like how Kia was surprised at the demand for the SX trim of the Optima and later adjusted production).

So no real numbers as of yet?

I still see the Genesis roll off the boats and haven't seen an R Spec trim come off in some time. Around here, there are like 4 of the tanium Gray R Specs at the local dealers, minus the one I bought. ;)

If it's true that the gray is a harder to find color, then what is more strange is that a lot of them show up in this area. The same was true for the Pontiac G8 I purchased. Gray was one of the lower number colors made for US and Canada (3500) but there were like 5 of them in my small town alone.

I saw a black R SPEC headed onto the Navy base where I work the other day. Also today I saw a Gray R Spec being loaded onto a truck headed out to a dealer. I didn't stop and ask the guy where it was headed.

I did find one lot today of where they store the Genesis for in coming processing before trucking them out to the dealers. But I didn't see any R SPEC's in that lot. So I think it's safe to say, we are a minority with our R SPEC. :)

I like that quote!!

What port do you work at Crusty?

I work on the Navy Base in Port Hueneme. The comercial side of the port is where the ships come in and off load the Hyundai, Kia, Mazda and BMW. They ship out Corvette, caddy CTS, Camaro and Buick Enclaves on the ships going back overseas.

All but the BMW's are processed on the Navy base. The BMW's are processed out in town. So I see them come in all the time. If you look on your window sticker, it will tell port of entry. Mine came in right here. ;)

Yep, It says HU. How long have they been receiving and shipping cars there? I didn't realize there was that much space there. I've in that area a few times and never knew.......

Look up Port Hueneme on mapquest and zoom in on the navy base. Then go to the sataliet picture and look at all the cars in the lot north of Plesant valley.
They've been doing it for a few years now.
The Navy has been leasing out these huge lots to them to make some extra money. They actually went thru and had most of the lots paved as it was just a big dirt lot. There is a company called GAP that process the vechiles into the country.

I know that this post is old as hell, but I just found it while looking for some other info.. Just looked this up and you're not joking... Theres a couple thousand cars sitting on those lots. Crazy stuff.

Another port of entry that Hyundai used in the past (and I assume still uses) is just north of you in Brunswick GA. This is where Hyundai Motor America imports and takes possession of the cars, may add a few accessories, does the window sticker, etc, and then delivers to the dealers.

Just bought my 2016 Black Manual R-Spec today. Headed to the dealer in South Carolina Friday to drive it 3 states home, very pumped! Anyone got production numbers on the last year r-Specs. Wikipedia has the total for all Genesis Coupes in North America: 4,781 + 952 for Canada = 5,733 worldwide.
