If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey, new around here, my first post. Just had a quick question. I’m contemplating getting a 2013 R spec sedan. Is this a solid car? Reliability wise. Anything I should be concerned about or that may steer me away?

cheers.

Just make sure you get the 2013 and not the 2012.

hoping for good reviews, I’ve been wanting one of these for a few years
cheers.

Thanks Aquineas, Big difference ?
Early 2012s had some engine teething problems. They fixed it by late 2012, but you should be fine with a 2013.

Hi Aquineas, thanks for the tip. I had a question you may have some insight too. I just got the carfax report for the vehicle history. It has no accident claims and was entirely dealer serviced. The thing is all the service dates are shown but not what was done. What is bothering me is there seems to be a lot of service records. 21 records. I guess that is only 3 per year, and oil changes, brakes, cabin filter, tire rotation or winter tire installation. Any other scheduled maintenance can add up. The thing that bugs me is some records seem to be quite close together.
Anyhow sorry for the long response. Close to purchasing this car, would be interested what your thoughts might be? Or anyone else who may have some insight

How many miles on the car? I had a 2012 Non-R-Spec 5.0 (I preferred the non-R-Spec 5.0 because I absolutely hate the R-spec wheels) that had one expensive problem that was present on delivery: The head-unit was defective. Thankfully, as it was brand new it was covered under warranty, but I think new they cost about 4K. Out of warranty, there is however a company in California somewhere that does head-unit repairs on Genesis models, so it wouldn't necessarily cost that much to fix out of pocket.

I don't have any insight into the actual warranty numbers on the head-units, but it sure does seem like it wasn't as an uncommonly reported issue on the forums that I'd hoped. I kept my car for 50K and traded it in on the 2015 when it was released, so I can't offer much personal experience beyond that.

I'd certainly get the car inspected before purchase. The flip-side of those service records is that they exist in the first place :).

If I'm honest, I kinda miss my 2012 a little bit. Here she is on the last car-wash she receiverd her before I traded her in. Whomever ultimately bought that car got a functioning laser jamming system (which was still legal when I had it installed):

I love it. That’s exactly the look I’m going for with this R spec. I’d miss it too.
this car has 92,000km on it. So I guess about 57k miles. This one is a 2013. It is a good thing there are service records, it’s a local car and exclusively dealer serviced. I think this is probably all positive the more I think about it. I appreciate your time, any other insights I’d appreciate too.
Thanks again.

I just bought a 2013 R spec earlier this year. Had only 91K on it. Can't say enough good things about it so far.
Had oil, tranny fluid and differential fluid changed just to start everything fresh.
It has the occasional electronic gremlin that pops up and disappears, has not triggered any lights or caused any problems (little things like passenger window will not go down one in every 15 tries, but never twice in a row) that I can't easily live with.
The car is a beast, but a civil beast unless you want it to be. Love the sound system.
Overall very happy with the car and would recommend. But it is always a crapshoot, get it checked if you can. Maybe the dealer could tell you the service history if it is local. I brought a mechanic with me to look it over, had to buy it before he decided to put in an offer. :)
Good luck!
During my research I found out that the 2013 has never had a recall listed anywhere I could find, not many cars have that going for them. Was part of my decision making.

Started off using premium, switched a while ago to regular. After using both for a period of time I see no discernible difference.
Premium gives you 5 extra HP. Can't tell the difference between 424 and 429. Still plenty for me.
Engine is not running any differently. Sticking with regular for now.

Gas mileage? Not driving as much. Can say it is worse than a Pontiac Vibe but better than a 1969 Camaro, does that help? :)
Think I get close to what is expected for the car.

Thank you. I was under the impression premium was required

Have you guys had electronics issues? Locks, windows, sunroof, cruise, stereo etc ? Thank you

As I said before, intermittent. Passenger window sometimes. Stereo without sound once. Blue screen on rear camera in rain once. When conditions are right/wrong get a collision warning on ACC, but only in the same places and only warning. None of these are continuous, nor trigger any codes or cluster lights. Restarting the car cleared the sound on the stereo.
It is a 7 year old car that has a lot of electronics and sensors. Overall I would say there is nothing that has happened that makes me regret the purchase.

Hi Aquineas, this car I am looking at has a sept 21/12 manufacture date. I understand the engine issues were reserved for models manufactured up until March 12’ do you know if this is true? Do I need to worry about tranny issues with these cars? Also have heard some things about that.
Thanks again for your time, just got trying to cover my bases here

Greetings! I can't confirm the engine dates, but it wouldn't be the first time I've heard Mar 2012, so if it were my money, I'd probably go with it. As for the transmission, I've had two Genesis models with V8s and that transmission without problems. Others may have a different experience, but aside from being a bit slow-shifting compared to the ZF 8 speed, I found them smooth and neither gave me any trouble. In fact, it was smoother than the ZF 6 speed I had in my 2010.

Not sure if it is still that way, new model years used to be introduced in September. A September build in 2012 would be a 2013 model year. You mentioned that it was a 2013 that you were originally looking at.
2013 would have the ZF8.
The engine issue was due to early use of low-friction piston rings from Germany that were a little too low friction, allowing oil blow-by. I've also read anything before March '12 was potentially suspect. Believe Hyundai replaced most of the engines, again from what I read during my research (I was originally looking at a 2012 that was for sale).
