Color Matching Mud Guards

I purchased a set of Mud Guards front and rear. I purchased a $15 paint gun and $40 Enamel paint that matches the exterior paint code. Mine is Silver code AU. I am going to paint the mud guards myself. If anyone has done this post your results. My biggest concern is if the mud guard bends too much it will most likely cause cracks in the paint.

You can get a rattle can paint-matched at automotivetouchup.com or similar for much cheaper and achieve fine results on such a small area, provided you follow the directions. Whatever your method, you should use an adhesion promoter -- especially on a plastic piece that will be taking so much abuse.

The jury is still out for me on the mud guards. I bought a set off Ebay, but haven't mounted them yet. I don't see much splash coming from the tires and I wonder if they'd really help much. There is quite a bit of fender wrapping around the tire as it is. I might just end up reselling them.

I think they give the car a more "complete" look but do wish they came in all colors. Does the black match the noir good?

Today I purchased the Flex Additive which goes in the enamel paint to provide better flex in the paint and reduces the chances of cracking. I also picked up a spray can of sealer as a adhesion promoter for the enamel paint sticking to the mud guards. I am cleaning the mud guards today. Hot water with dish soap then isopropyl alcohol cleaning then Sanding paste and cleaning pad. Then 800 grit sand paper and a cleaning all over again. All total is $100 worth of Paint and materials. I called around and could not find anyone who would paint the mud guards with the flex additive. I have painted parts and cars before so this should be interesting.

I can't believe what happened. I finished painting the mud guards and they came out looking great. Better than I expected. The finish looks great except the paint shop where I got the paint mixed Titanium Grey Metallic instead of Platinum Metallic I am going to have to purchase another set of mud guards get the correct paint and do it all over again.

I picked up the new paint today. They could not explain why the book showed paint code AU and it was soo far off the color of the car when they mixed it. I took in the front license plate bracket which is painted to match the car. They took a image of the paint and made me a quart of matching paint color. The new paint looks much closer to the actual color this time. I have never had this problem before when I got paint for cars in the past. More painting this weekend!

The paint job looks great though. So what happened, you painted all 4 mud flaps and then realized it was the wrong color? Did the shop give you the right paint for free?

I still am going to see if the color is a match for the Titanium Grey Metallic. If not then I will still have enough paint to repaint. I only used about 4oz of paint to cover all 4 guards. Yes the paint shop remixed the new paint for free. The paint looked darker in the can but I was hoping it would look right after it was dry. That did not happen. This time I am testing the color first.

So I painted the 2nd set of Mud Guards last weekend. Let them set over 24 hours until they were dry enought to touch. This set came out looking great. I had to apply 3 coats to get the coverage right. Installed them tonight and they look like a part from the factory. I will snap a pic when the sun comes back out this week. If anyone is considering doing the same post your question here and I will try to help. Total cost was about $100 plus the purchase of the mud guards. The paint used was less than 4 oz to paint all 4 mud guards with paint left over. I taped the mud guards so as not to paint the inside areas. I choose to keep the area behind the wheel black as it gets the most abuse. The list of items I used are below. You will need an air compressor almost any size will work. 8-10 psi air pressure output.

$15 paint gun - gravity feed (Harbor Freight)
$15 Enamel Paint (verify the color match)
$20 Sealer (spray can) optional - helps the paint stick to the plastic
$10 Enamel Reducer
$15 Enamel Activator
$15 Enamel Flex Additive (optional) allows the paint to stay flexable
$20 Sanding Paste (optional) removes chemicals from plastic

Any automotive paint store can supply you will all the needed paint supplies. I could have chosen urethane over acrylic enamel but the price of the paint was twice as much. Acrylic enamel is easier to paint in your back yard.

Suggest no one use Automotive Touchup. They can not match color AT which is the white pearl. They will only give 75% credit on their mistake plus they want you to pay return shipping. Totoal cost $50.00 plus $10.00 return shipping or $60.00 and then 75% credit on the $40.00 paint equals $30.00 for something they advertise but can not deliver.
