Rear license plate screws are cross threaded...

Something that should be so simple!

2019 G70 - went to replace my rear license plate - for the first time since I bought it - and I cannot get the screws back in. They seem to be cross threaded. It came this way from the dealer, so I don't know what is wrong. Anyone know the proper screw size? Thread/length?

Aren’t the screws just threaded into a plastic insert on the trunk rear panel? Been a while since I installed my plates but was thinking they just went into a plastic insert. Screws are not really load bearing so unless the screw insert is really honked up can’t image a cross thread situation being a big deal or the screw no longer threading. Mine is a 2020 so maybe you have a steel threaded insert?

Thanks for the reply. - It's not plastic, it appears to be a metal insert mounted to the trunk lid - I expected plastic too

The screws are Metric. If dealer used more common normal license plate (sae) attachment kit in an effort to install a dealer license plate frame they stripped the holes. I replaced my screws with allen head flush fit screws but do not remember the thread rate or size. Try to locate the screws that came with the car, possibly in trunk by the spare tire hardware or in the glove box or console and check fitment that way. Or at least to figure out tap size you need to correct thread damage, FYI: you will need a bottoming tap, not a tapered tap.

Quick story on those- last time I got an oil change, they gave me a rental (non-genesis, but that’s a different post) and they did something I hadn’t seen done before. They took my plates off my car and put them on the rental. When I was done, they swapped them back. They try to do this quickly, so they did it with an cordless drill at super speed, and when they put them back on, they stripped out the blocks on the FRONT plate holder. I just about tackled the guy that was doing it. The front is plastic I’m pretty sure. Back seems more sturdy.

I can’t imagine that this plate swap procedure is kosher. I would chat with the GM pronto. Plates should stay with a vehicle unless ownership is being transferred.

No way I'd let that happen. That's illegal as hell.

The Commissioner may, in his discretion, grant a special permit for the use of license plates on a vehicle other than the vehicle for which the license plates were issued, when the vehicle for which the license plates were issued is undergoing repairs in a licensed motor vehicle dealer's repair shop...

This also brings up the question of whether the loaner car is even registered and licensed itself. Keep in mind that if you bash the dealer’s car it would seem that it’s your insurance problem, not the dealer’s.

I’ve been using genesis of north Richmond (broad) since they’re closer. I see in your signature you’re RVA too. Which dealer do you use? I’m assuming you don’t get service/free genny loaner for your 2012.

I’ve used all three Richmond area dealers, but normally use Pearson since it’s 5 minutes from my house. The other two are a 30 minute drive away. I bought my ‘19 Santa Fe from Colonial Hyundai here, but I got my ‘12 Genesis from Johnson in Cary, NC (near Raleigh) because they had the exact car I wanted at a super price. That is a huge and impressive dealership.
