  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Do people take the second key fob with them when they go on an extended road trip? I figured it would be better if both my wife and I always had one with us. The second one doesn't do us any good sitting in a drawer back home if we lost one. Obviously can't keep the second one in any luggage in the car though.

I tried this with my car and it works. For situations where a second fob IN the car is required or desired it can work this way:

Remove the blade key from the fob.
Place blade key in magnetic keeper and conceal keeper outside of vehicle in an inconspicuous place (tailpipe hanger, under grille e.g.).
Remove battery from fob and wrap battery in paper or other non-conductive material.
Conceal battery and bladeless fob inside vehicle. Battery and fob need not be in same concealed location.
When access to car is necessary by person without fob (fob lost/stolen/alternate driver/etc) Retrieve blade from concealed magnetic keeper.
Enter vehicle using blade key
Retrieve battery and fob and replace battery in fob.
Fob now works normally and drive away.
It is possible that blade access may activate alarm but battery in fob will stop alarm.

I posted this ~a year ago but many new member since that time.

Yes! just have your wife carry the second key.

My wife carries her fob in a zip lock baggie with the battery separated just in case!

Thanks for the ideas guys! Take the battery out, duh. Then you can leave the second one in the luggage in the car. Or we'll just each have one for driving days and leave the extra one at the place we're staying once we get there.

Ok idea to a point,. Remember the car can be started with that key even without a battery. So if someone breaks into the car and finds it, they can hold it to the start button and the vehicle will start.
