Newbie here and thankful to have found this forum. Would like a bit of help before I leap from a bridge.
Bought son 2011 3.8 sedan a couple months ago, car had been babied and he was thrilled. Within last 8-10 days, driver seat belt light would occasionally blink, then go off. Thought might have something to do with seat belt harness/clasp/switch. Found nothing wrong. Quick internet search revealed no more info, so told son we would look at over on weekend.
Couple of days later, son reported that driver seat belt light flashes half a dozen times or so, but also battery light comes on. Read voltage while sitting, and battery was 11.4. Charged overnight, got to 12.2 and soon as unhooked charger, dropped back to 11.7. Decided to get new battery and installed interstate. Checked voltage and had 12.6, all good.
Four days after that, same issues. Took reading and battery was at 12.2v. Took reading with engine running and voltage increased .1 volts. OK, Alternator bad. Replaced alternator and belt, tested, and had bad alternator. Removed, went back to parts store, and they had no replacement for me. Quickly called around and found one a couple miles away. I took bad so could bench test, which in fact failed. Bought the alternator and paid $71 core charge (second core charge). Went home, replaced, and tested 14.5 volts while running at idle and battery held its charge when not running. Rechecked all connections, all was good. Perfect, had installed new battery, belt, and alternator (actually 2), and world seemed good.
Not so fast. Now having an issue with charging at idle speed. When rpms are above 1500, no issues. If in stop and go traffic for a little while, seat belt light flashes half a dozen times or so and battery light comes on. Son had me drive it so could see for myself. I purposely traveled busy roads with stoplights and traffic, and had him follow in my vehicle just in case. Bingo, idiot lights came on, first seat belt light flashing then battery light. If put car in neutral and bring rpms up to 1800 or so, lights go off in a couple of seconds only to be repeated when stop for next light. Made it home fine and car did not die, but this is driving me crazy. Went through all connections again, even plug in back of alternator, then disconnected and charged battery. Couple of hour later battery read 13.6, so connected and went for another spin only to have same results after a while. While alternator itself charges at higher rpms, sure seems like there is a voltage regulator issue, and believe it is built into alternator. Thoughts or suggestions?
