  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Comparing these 2 cars for about the same $$...my primary wants are comfort, isolation, quietness, reliability, easy maintainence. I know they're both probably good at those but which one is better or wins overall? anything to watch out for on high mileage versions of either? i primarily drive highway miles but on bumpy/broken roads in the midwest.

You are comparing FWD to RWD, two very different things, especially if you enjoy driving.

If FWD is good enough for you, you might do better to compare the ES to a Cadenza. You can get it for a lot less.

Lexus would be my choice hands down, for reliability

I found genesis to be more comfortable in long sitting, probably because car is bigger and wider (my guess). Lexus is probably more reliable, but won't matter much unless you are planning to keep the car 10+ which most people won't. big difference I think are terrible infotainment on Lexus as well as fwd basis - it just won't drive as nice as proper rwd sedan.

The Lexus ES is a glorified Camry. Same reliability, but equally disappointing appointments. Ride is a bit stiff in my opinion, unless you get a top of the line model with the touring suspension. Lexus also does the whole "You didn't put WHAT in this new a car?" thing. Usually a good 3-5 years behind the technology curve (sometimes more- my 2016 RC-F had transmission software components from 2007 controlling the wing actuation)

The Genesis will be a much more comfortable car, albeit with the caveat that with more comforts come more potential for problems. The infotainment system in all models will be superior to the ES in all models.

I would just add that if minor things bother you (i.e., you're obsessive about having everything work perfectly), the Genesis is likely to bug you. Genesis has a few issues with soft goods durability, with paint peeling, the Pano sunroof creaking & not closing, as well as the dreaded driveshaft vibration.

The Lexus will not have any of those issues. I'd call a Genesis 8.5 in overall quality compared to the Lexus at 10. However, the ride is great, it's super quiet, there do not appear to be issues with the engine, trans, suspension, etc. It feels solid in the way an A6 feels solid, and if you get the 5.0, you get serious power.

This sums it up pretty well, would add the numerous electrical gremlins of the Genny though and superior resale of the Lexus as two more points.

Love the Genny when it all works well, but there are just so many times when it does not that make it really hard to imagine getting into another one vs a Lexus.

Agreed - i hate my sunroof. it makes pop popping noise when it heats up and continues until car moves around a bit - last time i was told that some sort of coil inside that heats up and they cannot do much about it.

But ES has no V8 as well as a glorified Toyota (Avalon) with front wheel drive as well terrible infotainment, so i would never consider it.
