If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I've noticed that my DIS and Car Settings only allow control of the dimming/brightness of the DAYTIME display characteristics, and even though there is an "Auto/Day" function for selection of display brightness, it doesn't seem to apply to the DIS 8" screen, rather it seems only to apply to the dashboard and associated gauges.

Has anyone seen a different method by which to dim the DIS display at night other than to manually dim the daytime setting?

I'm sure this is either an oversight by Hyundai or may have been inadvertently omitted from the North American software/configuration... right?

The only automatic toggling on the DIS that I'm aware of is the map screen automatically switching between day and night mode (i.e. white background to black to preserve night vision).

As technical a person as most (present company included) think I am, I've yet to find any setting which inverts the contrast on the DIS display at night time. Unless you're talking only about the split screen mapping view when you have a set destination... What I'm referring to is the entire control display itself including Radio/Satellite functions...

Would you care to share the wealth??

My 2009 V8/Tech operates as follows:
* The DIS display in MAP mode shows black roads on a white background in "daytime" mode and switches to white roads on a black background for "night" mode. No other display screen switches to "inverse video" like the map display mode.

* In the INFO button on the DIS controller there is a menu item "System Settings." Inside that are "Display Dimming" and "Display Brightness." The brightness option brings up an adjustment scale (similar to the bass/treble scales on the audio menus) for display brightness when in daytime mode. The "Display Dimming" menu option determines what the display brightness does in night mode:
When "Auto Mode" is selected, the DIS screen brightness is 67% of the daytime mode at night. If "Day Mode" is selected, the display will be 90% of daytime brightness at night.

* "Night" mode activates whenever the headlight switch is in the PARKING LIGHT or HEADLIGHTS ON position. I don't know about headlights in AUTO mode; I don't use that. I manually turn the headlights ON/OFF to avoid the issues with AUTO during twilight hours folks have posted. My radio, phone, etc. page displays do get visibly dimmer (but they don't inverse video) when the headlight switch is ON.

Start up the car and while it sits parked, eyeball the DIS screen. Flip the headlight switch from OFF to the first detent (parking lights ON) and you'll see the display dim a little bit. Check the Display Dimming option to see if you have 67% (Auto) or 90% (Day) mode selected. When set to 90%, you have to really pay attention to the screen to see it dim. I find 67% at night still too bright; I wish I could dim it further.

We're on the same page :) -- that why I said "the map screen automatically switching" -- it's the map mode that inverses.

I did a little experiment on the commute last night. If you turn the dimming setting to day and then note the brightness, then turn on auto--after dark--you'll see that the brightness does adjust down. Not much mind you, maybe a notch or two, but it does go down. It seems like the higher the display brightness is set, the less useful that adjustment is (i.e. if you have it set to full brightness, the auto mode is full brightness -1). :(

As far as the instrument and console lighting brightness, I think those are independently controlled by the thumbwheel rheostat near the driver's door. EDIT: meaning that they're not tied to the settings in the DIS, although they do have a separate dimming function.

Whenever the automatic dimming function comes on (when I drive into a dark area), the display goes into night mode and the instrument cluster dims. This is what would happen if you switched on the headlights manually.

I get this, but unfortunately dimming the display "a little bit" doesn't exactly match up with what you'd expect, considering there is a setting for brightness on the "day mode" setup, you'd think they'd have a corresponding adjustment for "night mode" by toggling to a new scale by pressing enter on that screen. It would work such that when your lights go on, this is what is triggered in the "automatic" setting of the system...

Again, I think this must have been an oversight, and hopefully will be addressed by some kind of update in the future, although I doubt I'll see it before my lease expires in 2013 - my guess is that they'll modify the DIS system in a future model to incorporate more functionality (such as touch-screen and controller wheel simultaneously available) into the head unit.

If 2009 -> 2010 was any indication, suggestions are incorporated into future models, not incorporated into existing models, unfortunately. Examples include headlights that stay on for a few minutes after the car is shut off and three-blink lane change signals.

Thanks, Mike...great summary. For some reason, I didn't see this first, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to reply :)

Lets face it the auto mode of night time dimming is worthless. If you have the display bright enough to see in a bright day it is glaringly bright at night.

Wish I could disagree, but I'm 100% with you on this one. The "dimming" at night in auto mode is a tease more than anything else. It really needs to either invert color to a black background or dim substantially below the amount it currently does.

Sure wish someone with access to the tech service manual would post the codes to access the screens for adjusting the ratio day / night so we could fix it.
