If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey Everybody. I have a 2016 3.8 ultimate Genny sedan. Lately I’ve been having an issue with my trunk. For the last month or two, I would see an indicator pop up on my middle display like something was open, but it would go away quickly before I could see what it was for. It must have been for the trunk because it will not close completely. The mechanism leaves enough looseness that I now get a trunk open indicator all the time. I can’t even use auto-start because it thinks the trunk is open. Could anyone please help me diagnose and fix this problem? It opens and closes correctly, just not completely closed.

Does it latch but loosely? Or not latch at all? How much gap? I'm guessing you already went around the edge looking for anything that would obstruct it.

Thanks EdP. Correct. No obstructions. It latches loosely. How loose, I would guess around 8th of an inch. Enough for the system to indicate an open trunk.

Just looked at my trunk. When closed it is perfectly flush but can be pushed a tad below, maybe 1/8. Gasket springs it right back.

What I do not see is what senses that the trunk is closed but perhaps someone else will know. If you are closing flush, the sensor may need adjusting. If closing proud of flush, the latch would likely need adjusting.

Hopefully someone with know better than I .

Thanks. I'll check both out. And let you know.

I figured out today that the trunk button on my dash will also close my trunk if I push and hold it. Try that to see if it closes it better.

Thanks for your post. I use my dash button and the one on the trunk. I think it’s a sensor contact issue.

Have you tried closing it manually? Page 3-52 of the 2015 manual says to close the trunk manually to reset it. This may help if it's not closing fully. If not, a body shop may be able to adjust the latch or sensor.

Ok. I'll try that

as far as I know the "sensor" is a ground loop, like on the doors. closed trunk wherein the latch is engaged completes the ground circuit for the dash light alert.

if the circuit is open then the light is lit. . This is the same way the door and seat belt alerts work.

I would look and see if the green ground wire from the latch to the frame is rusted or damaged, you will need to remove the plastic shroud covering the latch to see this.

could be a loose ground, disconnected ground, damaged wire, or as you say the mechanism is not fully pulling the trunk into full closed position (it is loose), that could be a matter of the latch being physically loose and needing to be reseated, or the mechanism (motor) is failing and doesn't have the strength to fully seat the trunk.

My trunk does this same thing. The indicator on the cluster shows it as open when it is clearly closed but will periodically and temporarily show closed as I drive over various bumps and road undulations. What I've found is that pushing down on the trunk when it's closed will satisfy the sensor and the trunk open indicator will go off. For me, manually closing the trunk did not reset anything.

If I open the trunk and use a screwdriver to push the latch up as if the trunk was closed, the latch seems to have a predetermined position into which it snaps, but this still won't trip the switch enough to clear the trunk open warning light. However, if I force the latch up farther with the screwdriver, the trunk open indicator will go out and will go out consistently. So, I tried oiling the latch and working it up and down but to no avail. I'm thinking of trying to take the latch assembly apart to see what might find.

Is the closeness at which the trunk closes adjustable? Has anyone ever done this? I do not see or feel any gaps at the edges along the quarter panel and the deck lid. If I cannot get the assembly apart or don't find anything when I do, I think I'm just gonna buy a new latch.

Adjust the trunk bump stops so it lowers more. Takes 10 seconds. Little rubber twist bumpers on either side of the inner lid.

Same with the hood.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will keep this in mind.

I'll have to do this. I must confess though, I flipped the striker over. While this solved the trunk indicator light problem, the trunk now sits ever so slightly higher than it is supposed to, of course. Seems like 3 inches to me. I'll post back on how adjusting the bumper stops goes.

Does this REALLY work????? I can't try it since my Genesis isn't here right now. A few months after I purchased the car, I had it at the dealer for repair after an accident and told them to check out the trunk controls because my interior button was not working to close the trunk. They checked, they told me they checked all the service manuals, and even contacted the design team, and then told me that the interior button was designed to NOT close the trunk due to safety issues. And they had the car for 23 days since they were waiting for parts and transferring back and forth to the body shop they use nearby, so it wasn't an issue of lack of time.

That's crazy. I've had two Genesis and the button closed the trunk when you hold it.
