2015 5.0 Transmission Died

There it stopped dead in it's tracks in the middle of the road. Wouldn't even move when placed in neutral. Wrecker had to drag it onto his flatbed. Transmission is locked up & from what I was told, it self destructed & will need to be replaced. It's a 2015 with 67K miles on it. This car does not get driven hard despite being a 5.0. What are the odds that the dealer will help me out & do this under warranty? I just cleaned it up earlier that day (5-21) & it looks like a new car. Just bought this car in April from a private individual that provided me with all service records. It's been well taken care of. What are the odds that the dealer will take care of this out of goodwill? This car is my first Hyundai & first korean car.

Damn. The transmission failed at only 67k miles? Hyundai should replace it or help out due to Hyundai recommending no maintenance service or checks on the transmission under normal driving conditions.

However, a mechanical failures can happen at any time; hence factory warranties. Do your car have any check engine lights? If so, I would check the codes to see what exactly failed.

It's a crapshoot. I got to 120K without issue on my transmission on my 5.0 and it definitely got tested. With that being said, why wouldn't it be covered under warranty? Are you thinking it's over the 5 year mark?
 
The vehicle was titled to the first owner 5-25-2016 according to the Carfax vehicle history report with 7,678 miles on the odometer. The transmission failed on 5-21-2021 at 67,666 miles. My calculations put it at 59,988 miles driven on the car since the first owner purchased. I'm thinking that this should deem this as a warranty repair. Am I correct?

It would be for the first owner, not for you. I'd not count on any help.

Second and/or subsequent owners have powertrain components coverage under the 5-Year/60,000-Mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
 
My concern however is whether the warranty begins from the date of purchase or manufacture? This car was not sold until nearly a year after date of manufacture. I know that the first owner had 10/100 coverage & subsequent owners have 5/60.

The answer to that question will vary from dealership to dealership. I say this because your car is out of warranty so the dealership can request a "Good Will" repair request from corporate; which may or may not get approved.
However, since your transmission failed fairly soon after the 60k mile warranty; you may get help. Not guaranteed though.

You may come out better letting a transmission repair shop rebuild your old transmission if Hyundai says no to helping; and then dump the car since rebuilt transmissions are hit or miss.

Does not matter, but date of sale. , you are 7666 miles over the limit.

Given that it is locked up, I wonder if it is the trans. Other things can lock up the drivetrain.

There were no trouble codes that displayed prior to or even after this happened.

Yeah, I know. That baffled me.

Weird. Modern transmission usually always display a code when they fail. Overheating, electronic failure, slippage,etc. The TCM usually display a code leading to why the transmission failed; the most common is overheating due to slippage or low fluid flow.

Technically, the car is 6 years old but wasn't sold till a year after production. Miles were also over 7,600K. This must have been the demo/loaner car.

The warranty starts on the date the car was built. The build date information is located on a label on the driver side B-pillar that has the tire pressure information as well.

I have a 2015 model, but my car was built in late 2014 so my remaining used factory coverage stopped in late 2020; regardless of the miles left on the engine.

Correction: New car warranties start when the car is sold or the date on the purchase agreement unless used for any type of service like dealer loaners. However, with used Genesis the years and mileage on the car at the time of the most recent sale determines the remaining warranty period calculated from the build date or the date of new purchase(which are usually similar) entered in the system under the VIN number if available.

I think that we are thinking the same. Carfax records indicate that the car was sold to it's first customer on 5-25-2016 with 7,6K miles on it. That being said, I'm thinking that it's still under the 5/60 mile warranty.
 
Just got a call with a $6,000 price to replace the transmission. Dealer will not offer any goodwill service & advised me to take that up with corporate.

Sorry to hear about your issue. I would definately find out why the transmission failed before calling corporate office for goodwill. This will help guide the conversation you have with them. Also, I know it's a pain, but could you get a second opinion? I've never heard of the G2 Genesis sedan transmission going out this early, with such low mileage. Like the other posters wrote above, perhaps it's another issue that caused the transmission to lock up? Keep us updated, and good luck to you.
