  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

We recently had our transmission replaced on our 2015 genesis immediately after we got it back we drove it and stopped for lunch when we got back in the car the EPB and the auto hold would not let the car drive. We had to have it towed to a dealership in the town we were in and now they are telling us the issue is unrelated to the replacement of the transmission. Does anyone know if it’s possible that they are related?

I don't see how anyone can accurately answer your question without knowing the exact details of the failure.

I am new to this sorry. I am trying to find out since I had a full transmission replacement done when I got the car back from the dealer I drove it. Then I Stopped to grab lunch and when I went back to leave I started the car, no warning lights came on. then I moved it out of park to drive and the auto hold light came on the EPB light came on and the car would not drive. I pressed the gas but the brakes were locked. I had the car towed to the dealer and the EPB module has to be replaced. They said it has nothing to do with the work on the transmission but I’m wondering if that is true since it was literally right after I got it back from a full replacement of the transmission. I wondered if it might be related?

Details. When you put the car in drive, did the dash indicator say "D"? You said the brakes were locked. Did someone confirm that front or back wheels weren't moving? Usually EBD locks up only one set of wheels. Did you restart the car?

When replacing the transmission, one of the fuses may have been damaged.

When put in drive or reverse etc indicator did change. The rear wheels would not move, you could tell the car “wanted” to go but the brake would not release. We restarted, did a series of steps the dealership told us to do but nothing worked. Now they are saying the 2 things are totally unrelated but I was under the impression auto lock was directly related to the transmission?

I assume you mean auto hold (not auto lock). No, it is not related to the transmission, and it is not your problem either, which was apparently the electronic parking brake, a different system.

It is certainly possible (and even likely) that the timing of this failure is purely coincidental to the replacement of the transmission.

I did forget to add that they also replaced the fuse under a recall for the ABS during that same repair would the fuse possibly have caused the module to go out?

In no way that I can see. Those fuses don't even go to the EPB module.

And both the auto hold and EPB came on not just the EPB.

If/when the EPB fails (and turns the light on to indicate such failure), the auto-hold is disabled, since it needs the EPB as a failsafe (auto-hold switches to the parking brake under the right conditions).
So, anytime the EPB fails, the auto-hold failure light will come on too.

Maybe unrelated but I’ve found that if the drivers seatbelt is not buckled the EPB will engage, once I remembered to buckle up all was fine.

My 2015 Genesis 3.8 AWD, 45000 miles, just had a similar EPB failure, but there was no recent repair to associate with this. I did have the ABS fuse recall about a month or more ago. I could not drive the car, and the Auto Hold light came on as well. Warranty expired about 7 months ago. I had it towed on a flatbed with skates under the rear wheels thankfully. Got to Columbia Hyundai (OH) for Friday opening. Found out that the whole EPB module/system needs to be replaced, the part is on backorder for possibly a month, no loaner cars right now, and a $2400 estimate for the repair.

They should be able to physically release the parking brake and disconnect the module and give you your car back while you wait. You would be without the parking brake and the auto-hold feature, but otherwise you could drive it till the part(s) come in.

Not home to check on this........
Who remembers the thread where the EPB module was repaired by the owner for just a few $ (under $20 IIRC)

$2400 and a month is crazy!
welcome to our parts backlog. My local dealer has almost ten (10) cars needing motor replacements, with a 90+ day backlog!

The parking brake actuator unit should be available on the used/salvage market. Before I fixed mine (bad CAN bus chip - $1.50) I had found a used one for $75. I, like many owners never use it so the chances of finding one that's in new condition are very good. Lot's of crashed Ultimate's out there in salvage yards.

I had mine replaced this past spring for about $870 for the part and another $870 for labor. It took about a week to get the part.
