  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Is there a place on the forum or the internet that has a listing of good mechanics to work on Hyundai/Genesis? I've found none, so have resorted to only using Hyundai dealers.

Not specifically, but the Regional section may be a good place to ask:

I would start my search with Asian model specific mechanics who specialize in Hyundai/KIA repairs and then broaden the search to imports in general.

I would not trust a mechanic who specializes in mostly domestic car repair to work on an import.

That's the problem, I can't find any Hyundai/KIA specific mechanics in Dallas. Only dealers

Well; try an import specific mechanic that usually deals with Asian models cars in general. Hyundai and KIA cars are not that hard to repair if a mechanic know the basics; especially if they have tools and experience that are used for repair work on Asian model cars as a trade.

The Genesis seems to be fairly straightforward - my indie shop replaced the washers on trans warmer pipe that runs underneath the intake (5.0) in an afternoon for example. But they work on just about anything - Merc, BMW, Audi... and they complain about those! Said that the Genesis was pretty easy.

I agree.

I may not be an mechanic by trade, but I have worked on a few engines over the years from GM to Volvo. From what I have done or read in the Genesis service manual; the 5.0 engine is an easy to service engine as modern engines go; including replacing the timing chain which is a pain to do in the Audi.

A good independent shop is getting harder to find. To diagnose some issues, they often need the manufacturer-specific software. Since the license fees for some of these software suites can cost over $1,000 per year, most independent shops cannot afford to maintain all of them. There can also be delays in getting parts, since they likely don't keep parts for an uncommon car like the Genesis in stock and their orders will probably be treated with a lower priority than orders from a Hyundai dealership. I've seen independent shops that specialize in the German makes, but I haven't found a Hyundai one. I recommend avoiding brake, tire, and oil change shops for anything other than brakes, tires, and oil changes unless someone you trust recommends their work. I've had brake and tire shops screw up jobs on cars that are more common and probably much easier to work on than the Genesis.

In addition to checking the regional board as previously recommended, you could also check the coupe boards. The coupes have a larger modding community, so they may be able to recommend custom shops that specialize in Hyundai/Genesis.

I usually just source the parts for my Indie - and they don't have a problem with it, as we usually talk through what is actually needed for a job. Or we decide on servicing something well in advance and they source parts and give me a call when they've received them. Wear items like brake discs & etc are pretty easy to find. NAPA usually has stuff in stock.

A good one is getting harder to find though. I've had a good relationship with mine for about 10 years now. The only car that I've brought them that would make them want to throw a wrench was my Infiniti G35. They begged me not to buy another one.... mostly because maintenance items like a water pump required a massive amount of disassembly just to reach 'em.
