  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

New Car Break-in

Rather than start a new thread, I figured I'd bump this old thread up.

I'm due to take delivery of my 2022 G70 3.3T Sport tomorrow evening. I read somewhere that Genesis recommends a 600 mile break-in period - is this still the case? The guidance I read was keep the RPM under 4,000, vary the speed and throttle pressure, and go easy on the breaks.

TIA for any feedback.
having owned a lot of new cars and/or new engines, ive never followed a "baby it till XXX Miles" break in. Back in the day when i was a mechanic, we would beat on new engines, and the mechanics i have worked with recently, have beat on new engines.

your new car has already gone through manufacturer testing and "breaking in". Its something they put in their manuals, sure, but i have yet to see a failed engine from not breaking it in per manufacturers' recommendations, and have never seen a warranty claim denied.

Some people want to err on the side of caution, and you can if you want, but its not necessary. Have you ever been on a test drive with a salesman that said dont floor it, its still breaking in? Thats what most people do on test drives, test that bad boy out.

I’ve seen many posts like this one

Interestingly, my tester only had 250 km on it, and I can assure you that the GEM and I weren’t babying it during the test drive.

I once bought a demo vehicle from a dealership where I knew the owner, and despite the fact that it had 2,500 hard Kms to start, it never gave me any problems.

I think I’ll be cautious but have some fun.

As I mentioned I did go over to my local dealer, Genesis of Irvine (CA), which I do highly recommend for their service and their courtesy, and not only took a look at the 2022 G70 but was offered a test drive which I accepted.

Trying to stay on the subject of this thread during my test drive I did take it somewhere easy, but I did feel like it the engine wasn’t quite “broken in.” I really have no technical expertise on which to base this, just my subjective impressions. I’d be curious to know from any of you that do you have such technical knowledge is what I’m saying has any basis in fact or is my subjective impression just that only.

One last interesting fact is that because the dealer is still trying to physically distance, I was allowed to take the test drive myself and to take any route that suited me. I hope that this method of test drive stays permanently as it makes it much more enjoyable when you don’t have to worry about the salesperson looking over your shoulder.

Did you drive the 3.3T V6 or 2.0 four banger?

Good morning!
I drove the 3.3T V6. It’s interesting you ask, because I was never considering the 4 cylinder, I’ve actually never test-driven one. I suppose I should, just so I can know the difference.

Congratulations, and please post photos, as we’d enjoy seeing the new design. I think just for fun I’ll head over to my local dealer just to have a peek at it live, as they have several 2022s in stock, even though I will not be in the market for a new one for quite some time.

My solution to keep myself in check for those first few weeks to drive it in Smart mode and avoid Sport mode. Even now that I’ve had my 270 for almost a year is that so far, the Smart mode rarely takes me out of comfort and has a fair amount of time in Eco mode.

I suppose having a break in gives you more incentive to drive a few more miles to get yourself ready to early drive the car as it should be driven.

Enjoy!
The break-in is the second hardest part of owning the g70, the first is waiting another 19 days to get it!!! My first genesis and I am new to this community so its pretty cool seeing this big of a community for the brand and the appreciation and the inputs of all the owners. I will definitely baby that g70 when I get it for the 1000 km which I was told by my GXM even though I'm pretty sure it'll be fine without it

Just picked up a 3.3 G70 yesterday with 20 miles on it. This was one of my first questions, how many miles to break in and the response from the long-time genesis salesman was "they don't require a break-in anymore, you can go sport + and drop it right away". I was a little hesitant with that so today looked it up in the new manual and it talks about break-in but doesn't note a mileage such as 1000km. Either way, feels a little strange pinning it off the lot.

I have just under 1000 km on mine, and finally played with Sport+ mode last night.
Wow. That’s all I have to say.

I appreciate you bumping this. I just picked up my launch edition today and the service rep had no idea about a break-in period.... How are you liking yours so far??

if it helps you all....the 2019 said breakin was the first 600 miles. Keep RPMs varied between 2k-4k and dont launch or race the engine. Thats it. The whole 'do you need to break it in or not' thing Im not getting into. Just providing the information that used to be in the owners manual.

When I picked up mine the other day the service guys doing the inspection essentially said the break in period is a bunch of BS. Also said it’s only in the manual essentially because “it’s just always been there lol”.

I've heard it's not great to buy a NEW car and then drive it on the highway for a 1000 miles. Varying the RPM (as stated in earlier posts) help seat the rings, etc.

It's always a good idea to let the oil distribute when you first start the car and not to immediately stomp on it - obviously will lead to premature engine wear. That's true for the life of the car, not just the "break-in" period.

This is an interesting article about a dive into a high power Mopar engine at 235,000 miles. An examination and identification of issues known and unknown. Within the article is this quote:

The challenge for engineers in the 21st century is not stopping bore wear from occurring but trying to get sealing surfaces to break in and seal properly within the first 500 miles. Here you can see most of the original cross-hatching from the original factory boring job is still extant.
