Beware dark chrome issues

My 2021 G70 Sport with only 10,800 summer driven kilometers that I just picked up a week ago from a dealership 3 hours away has badly stained side window chrome all across all the bottom chrome. So the Service Manager agreed right away to replace the 3 affected pieces on each side, no problem. Just had to order it in. I asked if I could get it done through the dealership I usually deal with that is only one hour away. He said shouldn't be a problem.
I emailed closer dealership Service Manager who advised that she recommends to customers to buy this specific chrome polish off Amazon and do it themselves. Unbelievable on a $58,000 vehicle !!
Without replying to the above, I then contacted the first Service Manager again to confirm that he would still replace them for me if she won't. Yep, no problem. Hearing the story he notified the Regional Operations Manager of Genesis who agreed that I should receive new chrome under warranty and was going to contact my nearest Service Manager and advise her such.
Stay tuned....

So to confirm, this "Dark Chrome" is just a film over top of regular chrome that is just stripped off if too much polishing is done ??

Yes, with the 3M chrome polish the dark lacquer just wipes off. After using it the trim looks like matte chrome. The bond between the dark lacquer and trim is so weak that it will never hold up over time.

That's funny, I was also told by my dealer to purchase a chrome cleaner from amazon (I forget the name but its in an orange bottle)…did you try the product or did they just replace your trim?

They are replacing all eight pieces, just waiting now on one backordered piece.
Didn't even try the product because there's no point, to remove the stains you would have to remove the dark film.
They shouldn't even be telling us to polish them once they're stained, they know the result.
The only correct solution is the dealership to replace them and then the owner maintain them.

This was a year ago on a 2018 G80 Sport and they replaced all of the dark chrome on the car.

As of July 24, 2021, my dealer said there is a chemical coming to the dealers that will remove the stains/marks/fade, as they are NOT replacing the trim pieces anymore, and I will be told when it's in.

After just under two years, I am getting the trim completely replaced due to the spotting along with another set of the black trim/B-pillar covers that are starting to peel off (again). I moved from AZ to HI a few months ago and the dealer here originally said that they wouldn't cover it...should be the previous dealer. They're trying to work that out now.

Why is your present dealer trying to deflect back to the prior dealer? Not a dealer issue as much as Genesis POS trim pieces. It’s warranty work that should be billed to Genesis. If dealers have been picking up the tabs on folks trim replacement and not Genesis, I’m screwed for my purchasing dealer is no longer a Genesis dealer so I’ll have to go to another local dealer when my trim gets bad and battle it out possibly for a warranty claim.

I think they were focused on the workmanship of the black trim installation on the B pillar and not so much the material failure of the dark chrome. I wasn’t bothered by it and am not worried about it not being covered.

I just purchased a G70 Launch Edition and immediately I noticed the rear driver's side trim was spotted. Pointed it out and they replaced them while they were dealing with some paint issues. They initially told me they were going to try and buff them out but ended up replacing them.

Funny, they didn't have to order them as they had them on hand.

I too had issues on mine as soon as I picked up my 2022 LE. I've had the car for three months and its doing it again. I just chrome deleted everything. I think it looks way better black gloss, plus it matches the other piano black gloss trim.

Question for you: what paint issues did you have? Care to elaborate?

Yup! Looks much better. I have the melbourne gray LE, so it's very stealthy. Got all the chrome vinyl wrapped. Including the tailpipes.
