  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I called my Genesis dealer to make an oil change appointment. He told me it's 31000 miles so I am due for a D service which is a major service. I ask so what does that include: He said oil change, radiator flush, change a few air filters, lubricate the doors and check a bunch of stuff. $750.00
So my question is, are they out of their minds?

How much did they quote you?

The engine oil change and engine/cabin air filters make sense if you haven't changed the air filters yourself.

There is differing information regarding coolant replacement. On the following link coolant is recommended to be replaced at 120K, then every 30K after that:

But, the most accurate way to determine if your coolant needs to be replaced is to test your coolant's acidity level.

Did he offer a choice of KY or petroleum jelly?

Look at the manual, not some fiction service many dealers try to sell you,

Lets start with the radiator flush. The manual states:
Engine coolant
At first, replace at 120,000 miles (192,000 km) or 10 years :
after that, replace every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or 24 months

Air filter at 22,000 so if not done already, change it.
Cabin filter is a 5 minute DIY for $12. not the dealer $50 Should be replace at every 6000 miles.

They call it D service for a reason. D = Dollars.

I left out the price in the original post. They want $750.00 to do all this "checking"

Weird that new coolant can go over 100k miles while under warranty and then only 30k miles after the warranty is over. Sound like a nickle and dime scam to force customers to use the service department more outside of the warranty period to me.;)

Probably comes from the factory with the best available chemicals but Joe Sixpack will change it out with the cheapest he can find. Meantime, radiators do corrode and clog over time.

Perhaps after 100K miles, the corrosion level in the cooling passages warrants more often changes to refresh the anti-corrosion additives. As such, if you want to keep the car a long time, it would be better to change the coolant the first time sooner than the 100K mark.

Go by the recommendations in the owner's manual, which isn't necessarily the same thing that the dealer service department is trying to push. Get a price for the items that are recommended a la carte.

That sound like something a service manager would say to explain why the coolant would be less than a 1/3 effective after 120k miles.:)

However, the actual reason for the shorter interval is maybe that some old coolant will still remain in the engine block even after draining the radiator and that it may require multiple 30k mile changes to completely remove all the old coolant from the system.
