  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

BEWARE $400 deposit for Genesis test drive! Beware of the "fully refundable" $400 deposit for a test drive of a Genesis. I did not go ahead and buy a Genesis and it took 5 months and threat of legal action to finally get my fully refundable deposit back!!

While your vexed response is understandable, not calling out the dealer which exhibited this behaviour (because it is, after-all, behaviour specific to that dealer and not stipulated by the manufacturer) is about as useful as a dead-rat in a cupcake factory.

Glad you were eventually able to get your money back.

Personally, if a dealership wanted a $400 deposit to test drive any car I'd refuse and leave.

Never heard of anything like that. I'd have walked out if asked for a deposit.

What ?
I hail from Melbourne (Oz) and there are no genesis dealers I know of. I purchased my G80 at the end of last year from Sydney, it was carted to Melbourne and dropped off at Essendon Hyundai, prepared for all on-road requirements by them and then delivered to my front door.

I am saying this because I am familiar how Genesis operate. In Sydney everything is handled by the Studio located at the Pitt St Mall and test drives are arranged by them for their new test drive centre
87 Church St, Parramatta NSW.

The same sales model will operate in Melboune. A new Genesis Studio has just opened in Melbourne but is currently closed due to Covid. So, if you wish to arrange a test drive this will be done on-line. A Melbourne test drive location has not yet been announced. (blame Covid) At the moment a test drive vehicle of your choice will be delivered to your front door.

Again, there are no Genesis dealers in Melbourne, everything is handled by a Genesis Studio (now operational in Sydney and Melbourne) and unless these studios have started to ask for test drive deposits during the last few days, indeed I can smell a rat.

Perhaps the OP could tell us/me which dealer he/she was dealing with. I for one would be interested to know so I can follow it up and report back.

I doubt the OP’s story. Any deposit collected was likely not for a test drive. More likely it was to reserve a place in line to purchase a specific vehicle with the specs he wanted.

You may be right, but seems it was not conveyed properly. I'd still not give money up front before a test drive.

The OP likely knew that paying a deposit for a test drive is not normal anywhere. That’s why I say that the OP is not telling the entire story.

When I bought my ‘22 Tucson in May I gave the dealer a refundable $100 deposit which got me onto what I’ll call the “serious buyer list.” That ensured, at least in my case, that I got the exact vehicle I wanted when it came in the door. The vehicle was on order at the dealer but they didn’t have the VIN at the time. When I paid the refundable fee there weren’t even any new Tucsons on the lot to test drive and we hadn’t even discussed the deal.

That all said, why didn’t the OP name the dealer so the matter can be investigated further.

He did, he just posted it inside the quote from the message he was responding to. I just edited it to remove it from the quote so that it's easier to see.

Thanks, Sal. So this is an Australian disgrace. 🤔

The OP has certainly been strangely vague about the location and the details.

I test drove at two dealers in So cal and bought 2022 G70 at a third no deposit. I watched one dealer let a guy do a test drive without the salesman in a G80 because I was buying a car and they didn’t have the staff.

Australia is the country that sells vehicles at list price with no markups. No scams there. 🤣

I walked in totally cold and was test driving, without an escort, within 5 minutes. Eventually bought it, but salesman couldn't have known that! (Michigan, by the way)
