Why does 5.0 take so much oil?

Okay, so I just got a used 2018 Genesis G90 with the 5.0 v8 and took it in for my first oil change today. The guy at the shop was like "wow, this thing takes 9.7 qts of oil." I later corrected the guy because the 9.7 qts is actually for awd and I have a rwd which is actually 8.5 qts, which is still a lot. So whats the technical reasons for why the Tau 5.0s take so much oil?

the technical answer is that the oil lasts longer when more oil is in the pan, each oil molecule had to do less work. This increases the life of the engine because the oil is in better condition longer, and the added volume also reduces oil changes. A lot of newer engines are going this route.

Engine longevity. A larger oil capacity helps an engine run cooler and also helps protect an engine from wear due to some oil loss(loose piston rings, pcv valve issues,neglect) in-between oil change intervals.

I am glad the engine uses as much oil that it does which is a sign that this engine is design to last well beyond 150k miles; as opposed to many other modern engines that seem to be designed as "disposable" engines with a very short life span of about 150k miles before being replaced or needing major internal repair work.

I'm a fan of engines which need oil fill. It is a good sign.
My Mercedes S class 4.7L bi-turbo takes 8.5 quarts too. Oil is cheap. Even the best quality true synthetic polyalphaolefins (Group III oil) cost 30 bucks for 5 quarts.
