  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have to say it, the G70 needs a new transmission ASAP

There has been nothing saying the 2022 got an updated transmission tune and no evidence of it either. The only confirmed thing is they have messed with the drive modes, which includes shift points. That isn't a tranny tune.

I havent been talking about anything other than the transmission....
The '22 has a new sports+ mode, and the shifts are perceptibly quicker, and it holds the gears better in manual than my old '19. They have definitely iterated the box or tidied up the software. Also suspension rides better.

How about the corporate 8-speed DCT in the Kia K5 GT? Currently seems to handle the 290HP in the Kia, could possibly be beefed up go behind the new Smartstream 3.5TT, and dropped into the next iteration of the G70?

All Hyundai DCT transmissions are for FWD based applications, you can't "drop" them in a RWD based car like the G70.

Noted, but the tech is there, just need to design the case for RWD/AWD applications. I suspect the current 8-speed transmissions (RWD/FWD) are just variations of the same unit.

Not just the case, they can't do it without spending millions on R&D, testing ....etc.

A DCT transmission has its drawbacks too, other makers are shifting away from DCT, so unless they do a BMW M competitor, a torque converter automatic is the best fit Genesis products for luxury/sport sedan applications.

Some of the lower priced Hyundais had a DCT and many ppl complained about how they drive compared to a conventional auto trans. Seems odd that Kia would develop a DCT for what I believe is a pretty low volume car like the K5 GT.

Here is an interesting vid on Hyundai's DCT8 "for high torque applications", but they don't specify which car or engine.

I recently drove a 2020 Golf R and hated the feel of the DCT. I'll keep my conventional automatic, thx.

I’ve said for years that if the DCT was first, then the torque converter came along later, it would be hailed as the best thing since sliced bread. These are not race cars, they are made for every day driving.

I personally have no issues with the G70 automatic. And my last car was a BMW 540 with arguably the best torque converter automatic ever.

Well, everything old is new again. In 1941, Packard introduced the "ElectroMatic Clutch", a system of vacuum servos and electric solenoids that operated the clutch and shifter on their conventional 3-speed with OD transmission. Sort of a Rube Goldberg robot shifter.

In the end, the finicky contraption was killed in the marketplace by GM's torque converter Hydramatic.

Kia use Hyundai engines and transmissions.

The Hyundai 8-speed DCT is in almost all FWD Hyundai/Kia/Genesis cars that use the 2.5 turbo engines, the reason is probably because its the only FWD based transmission they have that can support the torque of the 2.5 turbo engine.

They also use it sometimes with the 2.0 turbo engine (i30 N, Veloster N ...etc) and some 2.2 turbo diesel cars as well.

FWIW I test drove a GV70 a couple weeks ago and the transmission programming seemed much better than my 2019 G70, which can be sometimes laggardly

I didn't think that Genesis had any FWD vehicles.

the 8 speed dct is only in the N-Line Veloster and Sonata and the Kia K5 and Sorento

They dont. This guy is confused.

I wonder if transmission updates/upgrades have been applied to coincide with the 2.5t and the 3.5tt Smartstream engines in the GV70?

I recently saw a Youtube review from an Australian auto writer reviewing a Hyundai diesel Santa Fe (?) with an 8-speed DCT. He did 12 uphill reverse "torture test" passes on his long, steep driveway to see if the trans or clutches would overheat. They didn't. This car obviously isn't sold in the US, but he did give a thumbs up.

Currently they don't, its a habit of mine that I always write "Hyundai/Kia/Genesis" in the same sentence. Sorry about the confusion.

Lol, you do realize that I'm the one who maintains that wiki page?

The 8-speed DCT is available on these cars as well:-
Hyundai Elantra N
Hyundai Kona N
Hyundai Santa Cruz (w/ 2.5T engine)
Hyundai Santa Fe (w/ 2.2T diesel engine)
