  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I need a new battery for my ‘12 Sedan 3.8. Last time I bought a group H8, which fits perfectly, but the group 49 should be identical, no? Opens up lots more options. Also Consumer Reports has tested group 49.

I plan to stay with AGM. Anyone using FLA or Odyssey ($300+ :-O ) with good results.

Thanks!

See if you can find more answers from my old Battery thread from 2ish years back:

Also correct me if I am wrong but an H8 battery is listed as a Group 49 as if its the same so not sure if there is a difference. Also, for what its worth I think I saw the H8/49 battery at my local Costco as well as their batteries are well rated and the exchange is effortless if you have issues within the 3 or so years of the warranty.

Thanks Shahhere! Some sources suggest that 49 and H8 are identical but my DieHard from 2017 says H8 so not sure. Costco battery finder (Interstate) says they don’t sell a battery for my ‘12 3.8 sedan. Elsewhere, Interstate AGM H8 is $240.
btw…
My Solar (Amazon a number of years ago) tester says the battery is bad but the Interstate branded tester at a local shop says my battery is good. Off to search for info on battery testers…

From everything I"ve read here that this car is a power hungry car with a lot of electronics so its not a good idea to let the car battery die and run on the alternator........so the suggestion is to change battery about 5ish years BEFORE it actually dies. I bought my 2012 at the end of the year used and felt like i had issues towards the 2019 year so figured it was overdue and changed to the one listed in the thread i posted.

Yea, the Online Costco site says its not available but I've seen it in the store in PA; I had checked when I changed it in 2019 and did not carry it but did carry it sometime last year/early this year as I remembered the battery model number and saw group 49 in person. This forum lists the cost at Costco around $178+Core costs: Quick Question: Purchased Interstate H8 (49) Battery...

Update: Bought an Interstate H8/49 AGM at Costco. Website said no match so I called my local Costco and they said the group is new to this store. They had 4 in stock.

Out to hunt for the battery as mine is not starting today, I guess I missed the "Change before it dies" mark that I famously noted above :(. I hope there are not issues..

Okay false alarm as it was the trunk that stayed open that drained the battery. I should look into when exactly I changed the battery and change it out this summer....

It remains surprising to me what kind of odd symptoms can start happening due to a weak battery (which can actually be hard to diagnose, in a lot of cases)...

Agreed. Modern electronics can be sensitive to voltage causing unpredictable behavior.

I think of all the things this car has thought about; the trunk staying open and the battery draining is clearly not thought through right. This happened before as well when the battery was new as in 2ish days the battery drains and wonder how to prevent this from happening......
