  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have searched and searched to no avail. My 2013 rspec 5.0 sedan makes a loud clicking noise on the drivers side valve cover area when it's cold out or car has sat all night. I know the gdi motors are noisy but what's odd is this clicking or rattle is intermittent like the ac pump is cycling. Ac is off. Car only has 68k miles and been babied. It is most definitely on driver side front of engine. Fuel pump? Rattles for 3 or 4 seconds and then stops for 3 or 4 seconds. Does this for a couple minutes until car is warmed up. Thanks for any insight.

post a video.

Sounds like dry lifters. Almost like they are not building up pressure. Has the oil been changed recently? And was a OEM oil filter used?

Yes. Oem filter was used and oil change was done within last 1500 miles. Never does it when ambient temp is above 60 degrees or car is warm. It turns on and off like it's cycling is reason why I think it's not a lifter. It's like something is kicking on and off. I have had noisy lifters in a truck before. It doesn't seem like that to me but I could be wrong.

I wonder if there is some kind vacuum valve in that location? Can you pin point the location down with a screwdriver?

I am going to dig into it deeper tonight. Going to remove some of the air box and tubing leading up to the intake manifold and see if I can find something. Its odd that it turns on and off. Could be a lifter I suppose but Im not entirely convinced. Is there a high pressure fuel pump in that location that could be cycling? Im having a hard time finding lots of info on this car. My truck is a ls motor silverado. If you cant find info on it on the internet then you dont need to be online. haha

Looks like the Purge Control Solenoid Valve (PCSV)
Thats it. Noisy little sucker. It fires and then stops for a while. Hence the intermittent clicking. Appreciate the help from everyone.

Well, although that valve clicks and makes noise, unfortunately that is not my culprit. Back to the drawing board I suppose. Did it on cold start up again today.

It is about 3/4 from full line. Not on full though
Just a suggestion: Put it to full.

My 4.6 makes more lifter/valvetrain chatter when it's started cold on low oil (at the low mark, not 3/4). Yours is obviously not low, but it will help eliminate possibilities.

Did that lastnight. Added 1/2 quart to get it right on full mark. It may be water pump or alternator as well. Can we start these cars without a serpentine belt and see if it's something belt driven rather than a timing chain or lifter issue? Obviously quick start to see if the clatter goes away shouldn't hurt anything?

You can definitely do that for a few seconds.

Update. Started car without serp belt. Noise is still there. Sounds like a timing chain tensioner or rocker arm? Not sure. Anyone ever pulled a valve cover on one of these or have a digital service manual for these 5.0 gdi motors? Thanks
