  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Lo and behold, I dragged my ass outta the house and drove both V6 and V8 - not for long, maybe 3-4 miles each.

So the V6 vs V8. I definitely can feel the difference. I floored the gas on both right outta the dealer's gates and where V6 decided to shift and whine at quite a noticeable high pitch the V8 didn't budge and just kept pulling - quite an amazing feeling if you ask me (granted i've never driven a V6 - more so V8 before :) The interior is extremely quiet comparing to my Acura TSX, though I think I heard a bit more road noise in V8. Also V8th steering wheel vibrated just a tad, but i still kinda noticed that - can't say for V6 since I drove that one first. Probably will need to go back and confirm whether it was just that car, V8 or they both do that.

ACC is a fantastic toy - I can live with that right now! The break hold or whatever it is called - when you stop and can take your foot off of the break pedal is quite interesting, though @ a first blush feels a bit weird.

Non-touchscreen NAVI is okay, I can live with that.

Now, could anyone please give me a rough idea how much the tinting costs these days and where - at a dealer or an independent shop?

Thanks!

Had mine tinted at Ziebart..........tint windows, side and rear, 40%, better grade with lifetime warranty, $$219.00.........did an excellent job, had my last several cars tinted there.

Glad you liked it. I was also hooked the moment I test drove one.
Just like you, I drove a V6 and a V8 back to back.
Noticing the power difference, my mind was set on the V8.
Powertrain vibration upon cold start was more noticeable on the V8 though.

As far as tinting, try to look for your local listings and reviews.
Ceramic tints seem to be the popular choice although it's a little more costly.

Good luck.

any comments on ride comfort of 17" v6 vs 18" v8? Is 17" significantly softer or are they around the same?

The 18" tires drive a bit harsher, but it isn't something that one might even notice without doing a side by side. I could tell the difference when going from firm sidewall 18" Dunlops to softer sidewall 17" snow tires.

Similarly, the V6 feels a little lighter, quicker reacting to steering inputs, but again, it is a very small difference.

Both pull very strongly, but the V8 appears to do it in a less labored manor...more smoothly.

Both are hampered from being true sports cars by the "nanny controls", the overactive ESC and traction control, which can't be entirely disabled without pulling a fuse.

I'm glad you enjoyed your ride. You can't go wrong with a Genesis. It is one of the finest cars in the world. If you've browsed this forum, I'm sure you can tell how happy Genesis owners are. :grouphug:

I think the V6 has sufficient power, but I bought the V8 because I had a bad feeling that for the next 10 years I would be wishing I had gone ahead and gotten the V8.

Definitely get the Tech package. The adaptive cruise control alone is worth it. I use ACC all the time. It works beautifully. You will also get swivel headlights, rear view video, and other goodies.

The automatic brake hold feature is occasionally useful when waiting in stop and go traffic or at a drive-through car queue.

The automatic windwhield wipers are a very nice feature. They never fail to get the right speed.

As you may have noticed, the ride and handling of the Genesis is closer to a BMW than a Lexus or Cadillac. Some people like the feeling of control and road feedback, others want to cruise on a cloud.

Depends on where you live. If you were in texas you could get tint for around $150 with lifetime warranty.
Actually it depends mostly on what kind of tint film you get installed: dyed, charcoal, metallic, ceramic (sputtered), etc. High-end films will block more heat for a given VLT (visible light transmission) percentage rating, but they can be expensive (up to $400 or more). Like A/C work, expect to pay at least 10% more in the summer when they are very busy.

The majority of those who have complained about the early 2009 suspension would be quite satisfied with the 2010 suspension. Hyundai made a mid-2009 model year change to the rear shocks, and changed the shocks and springs in 2010 for all 4 wheels. Small changes, but probably enough to resolve the issue for most people.

As you noted, the 2010 ride is still definitely more firm that a Cadillac (I have heard reports that Lexus is firming up their suspensions compared to previous years, especially on GS models and to some degree on LS models).

So bottom line, if you like a somewhat firm suspension, you will not have any problems with the 2010 Genesis ride. I don't think the 2010 Genesis is quite as firm as BMW or Infiniti M.

Glad you like the test drive. I've test drive both v6 and v8 many times with several dealers in town, while waiting for them to search the color we like. I tested them while it was snow, rains and good wheather conditions. We decided to pick the 2010 v8 with tech pakage. This is a real good option package offers for Genesis. I now start getting used to it and like all the features which sherrod mentioned. The voice ricognition is very good. It can pick up your command at very low volume. Inside cabin is very quiet. The DIS is very easy to use in addition to it, I like the sound outputs from Lexicon with 17 speakers with Tech package also. I also like the steering wheel, very tight feeling and precise when turning. As Sherrod mentioned, this car drives and feel toward the European car (BMW, MB) with little bit softer drive. than Lexus. I just wish it has fold rear seat (either standard or option) and match color mudguard.

That applies to the American Genesis only? or to all around the world?

V8 with Technology Package is da bomb. I would've never thought that Genny V8 would be a killer of Lexus LS460 GS460 GS350, Infiniti M35 & M45, BMW 5 series, Acura TL & RL, and most of MB. I just love her to death.

Only to North American (US and Canada) AFAIK. The NA changes were designed and "tuned" at the Hyundai Test Facility in the Southern California dessert. There is a You Tube video showing the guy who claims to have been in charge of the NA Genesis suspension tuning (he probably regrets making that video).

The domestic Korean version (basically the same as sold in Middle East and Russia) has a softer suspension that is standard and an adjustable air suspension that is optional. Hyundai Motors America (HMA) thought that the Korean version was too soft for US tastes (more specifically, too soft for US auto press who would review the car). HMA was probably correct, but went a little too far the first time around. It is also possible that the heat of California desert softened the springs up just a little during testing caused some mis-tuning for the rest of us.

By most accounts, Hyundai made changes for the 2010 model which softened the springs rates just a little, and beefed up the shocks rates a little, to get them in balance. Previously the springs were overpowering the shocks and the ride was too bouncy when encountering a bad spot in the road (or even a wavy road).

I could be wrong, but AFAIK the Genesis sedan is only sold in South Korea, Russia, Middle East, US, and Canada (although I suppose it could be imported by individuals to any country).

i noticed that v8 ride was a bit harsher and louder, probably and most likely due to the bigger tires. However as one of the previous comments says you won't notice it unless you drive it side by side with a v6 with 17''. I definitely would not have noticed it have I jumped to the v8 straight from my Acura.

Gee, I never would have guessed that this thread would include the old "suspension complaints" topic. I've stayed completely away from the fray on this, but it's getting a little old, even for me. Mark (and others), what exactly do you expect to come of your continued dredging up of the same old comments? Do you really think that Hyundai pays that close attention to this forum that your comments will lead to a retroactive solution for you? I would think your time would be better spent emailing/calling back and forth with Hyundai corporate in an effort to resolve your individual issues. I'm not sure what the sales figures are for the Genesis sedan over the last 2+ years, but I'm guessing the 5-10 people on this forum who consistently complain of this issue constitute a small percentage of buyers. I know, I know, the automotive press has buttressed your argument about the unsettled suspension, but do you think that your continued rehashing of the same comments--you could cut and paste the same stuff from one thread to the next--in this limited forum will achieve more than the national/international press has accomplished? I for one own a June '08 build 2009 and have no complaints, so this business about a mid-model year change fixing the issue is subjective, at best. Are we still going to be reading about this here a year from now? Two? The 2011s will be out this fall. At what point can we put this to rest? I came from an Audi with a sport suspension and appreciate the tautness. It's what I was looking for. I don't know who it was who made the comment that coworkers refuse to ride in the back of his car, but that kind of hyperbole makes the argument absurd. I mean really? Those with this issue, take a breather. We all get it. Your comments can be found in just about every thread in this forum. Everyone here empathizes with your situation. It's CLEARLY an issue for you and I wish you luck with your efforts to reach satisfaction with Hyundai. But this forum is not run by Hyundai. Have it out with them.

Gee, oreipa, "methinks you protest too much." Seriously, does every discussion of the suspension have to include pointing fingers at owners that merely state their views?

A ride question was legitimately asked by "Konig" and answered. Leave it at that. Everyone deserves to have their opinion and no one should be chastised for that opinion.

FYI, the Genesis isn't perfect. Not sure if any car is.

No one is insulting you personally, by not liking something about the car and you should not feel you have to defend the car, like you were defending your own honor...especially not by putting people down for their viewpoints.

It is one of the oldest argument tricks in the book to attack the arguer, vs. the argument. It reminds me of the old SNL skit with Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtain; Point/Counterpoint.

Now lets all get back to discussing the car.

Protest too much? I do not begrudge anyone for posting complaints about the car. That's their right and it's part of the reason I read this forum. I want the good as well as the bad. It makes for a more informative discussion. I have posted several complaints myself. I've just grown tired of reading the exact same comments time after time, that's all. As far as insults, I wasn't looking to insult anyone. If I did, I apologize. I am also not trying to "defend" the car. My wife, my kids, them I will defend. Not a car.

Like I said, I'm satisfied with the way mine rides. '09 V8, 5/20/2009 build.

Dan
