South Korean brands have proven to be the most reliable.

In the annual JD Power vehicle dependability survey three out of the top four spots were claimed by Kia, Hyundai and Genesis, which are all part of the giant Hyundai Motor Group.

The US survey, which is now in its 33 year, ranks car brands based on the number of problems with vehicles after three years of ownership.

It covers 184 specific problem areas across nine major vehicle categories: climate, driving assistance, driving experience, exterior, features/controls/ displays, infotainment, interior, powertrain and seats.

No similar survey exists in Australia because unlike their counterparts in the United States, local executives refuse to share quality information with the public.

While the results are not universally representative of cars sold here — some are built in different factories — they are the best guide to brand quality Australian consumers have.

Kia vehicles reported 145 problems per 100 vehicles, followed by Hyundai (148) and Genesis (155). Buick claimed second spot but isn’t sold in Australia.

Genesis was the best placed luxury maker. Genesis, which is Hyundai’s luxury offshoot, was the best placed luxury brand surpassing big name German makers such as Porsche (162), BMW (187), Mercedes-Benz (195) and Audi (232).

Genesis North America boss, Claudia Marquez, says: “We are passionate about performance and believe that every detail is significant in the design, engineering, and production of all our vehicles. We are pleased that customers have found their Genesis vehicles to be the most dependable among all premium brands.”

Toyota, which has built its reputation on reliability, wasn’t far behind the South Korean makers with 158 problems reported and Lexus followed closely with 159.

The worst performing brands in the survey were Land Rover, which includes Range Rover, with 284 problems per 100 vehicles.

Ram was second last with 266, followed by Volvo (256) and Alfa Romeo (245).

David Amodeo, head of JD Power automotive says the dependability survey is even more important than ever.

“Many owners are holding on to their vehicles longer, so long-term dependability is even more critical,” he says.

Last year in Australia it was revealed that Mercedes-Benz issued the most recalls in the nation. It was followed by Toyota, Nissan, Land Rover and Subaru.

Been exposed to the uniquely quirky dry sense of Berliner humour for too long. Once you get the hang of it, it will never leave you. Trying to splice that Berliner humour into every day English has the result that some people who understand it are rolling on the floor irrigating their underpants and others blankly stare at you.

JD Power is not trustworthy. None of the sites like that are trustworthy. Sorry to say it, but even as a Hyundai/Kia/Genesis fan, I have to admit that Toyotas are more reliable. Now of course, the Hyundais aren't bad (well, I guess except their bad batch of 4 cylinders that all fail and all their recalls), but they aren't the best, and some of their mid 2000s cars are very reliable, as well as their V8s, which I put second to Lexus V8 in terms of reliability. JD power is just paid to say certain things. The only thing I trust when it comes to this type of stuff is my own opinions and the opinions of others who are not professional reviewers.

Yes, I have eaten many of them with fries. Of course I was only in my early ‘20’s then. Nowadays the curry sauce would eat a hole in my duodenum.

Herta’s first currywurst stand was on Kantstraße, a street famous for other delights (and risks).
