  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I know this might be a long shot, but figured I'd check with the community here.

Does anyone have any experience swapping the AVN / Navigation Head unit themselves from another Genesis? If so, can I take a unit from another same year/model Genesis (i.e. probably buying it off Ebay) and swapping it with my existing unit without bringing it to a dealer to be programed/activated?

I mainly want to confirm there is no lock to a specific VIN (realizing there are still different variants and codes to deal with if I want a perfect match). Technically speaking I know I can physically replace it, just want to ensure software won't stop it from working; save for things like BlueLink/SiriusXM which I know may be impacted.

The long story - I have a 2015 Hyundai Genesis, that just had its head unit locked up by a map software update (the latest v15 from April 2021). The update is stuck in a loop at the "updating modem" step and ends up returning Error Code 604. The system restarts, and this cycle continues indefinitely even after restarting the unit with the pinhole. This prevents me from accessing anything on the screen including the back-up camera and any Audio features (or even CarPlay). This isn't a widespread issue from what I could find, so I guess I'm the lucky one.

I've successfully upgraded the software in the past with no issue, and I can't fault MapNSoft unless I had a buggy SD card that messed something up (I paid to order the card straight from them with the preloaded update). I've reached out to them and so far they have been helpful, but just trying to get a backup plan in case I need to replace the unit myself... which is out of warranty since its a 2015 model.

Any advice or direction on this is greatly appreciated.

I am sorry your unit bricked. Yes, you need the GDS. So, need to go to dealer or buy the pricey GDS.

Thanks for the reply -- thats what I was afraid of.

Another Hyundai owner had the same issue and disconnected the battery for two hours before trying again....it worked. Maybe disconnect the battery before going to bed and try again in the morning.

Thanks for the suggestion - I saw that somewhere as well and just had a fear that disconnecting the negative terminal for that long might cause other issues (potentially with key programming). I did remove 5 fuses that the navigation system touched for about an hour with the same results at the end.

At this point it might be worth a shot though.

Assume you tried to re-upload the original firmware version/memory card?

I've had my battery go dead and it caused no issues.

I assume that you have tried removing the card, leaving it out, and hitting reset to see if you could get at least some function back?

Sorry, what does GDS stand for?

That's Hyundai's Global Diagnostic System, made by GIT. The previous version is available as a knock-off handheld computer. Good for diagnosing many problems/trouble codes. Without a dealer technician code, it has limitations. Worth the current price, around $100-125. I programmed a second FOB with mine.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their responses. I tried everything including the pinhole reset, fuse removal, battery discharge etc. and nothing worked.

I've been in contact with Hyundai AutoEver/MapNSoft for the last few days and they were a great help in having me do a forced update after moving some directories around on the SD card. When I first tried it, it gave me an error, but I left the car off overnight... started it up again in the morning and somehow it all worked and was updated to the new software. Given the AVN unit was stuck on an update loop, I think this forced update got it out of its cycle.

BlueLink still doesn't work, but that's tied to a modem issue I'm trying to resolve. The MEID is all zeroed out (000000000000000), so it leads to me believe that the modem component failed or is bricked. Given Verizon is ending its 3G service in December 2022, I knew this capability was going to be ending anyway.

If anyone ever has any issue like this in the future, just reach out to Hyundai AutoEver/MapNSoft and they can help resolve it. I think my car hardware was just a special isolated case though so it shouldn't deter anyone from updating in the future.

Get a new 64 gig SD card, use Rufus to format it as FAT32, then use Navigation Updater to load files onto it.

I use the SanDisk SD card of 32 g & 64 GB but the 64 have xse format only. Is et effective while downloading?

Does anyone know when the next software version is being released?

Actually we don't have this type of USB. Please check this type of USB if it is available. attached file fui.
Put the SD card in the computer and use Rufus to format it as FAT32.
