  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi,

I am the owner of a 2012 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 with about 44k miles and, while coasting, the car noticeably decelerates when downshifting occurs. Is that normal for the Genesis or is it something I should look into?

Thanks,

My 2014 5.0 also exhibits noticeable engine braking, more so than any other car auto trans car that I’ve driven. I bought it new and it’s done it since day one. I noticed it before I even got off the lot during the test drive. It’s like the torque converter doesn't release (unlock?) until you get down to about 10 mph, at which time the car begins to more freely coast.

Yeah, it took me a while to get used to it, but I don't notice it anymore.

A 4200 lb luxury land barge with 32 valve DOHC v8 engine ain't no honda insight. You're gonna feel it comin' and goin'

My 4000 lbs Lincoln LS with 32 valve DOHC V8 had way way less deceleration when I lifted my foot off the gas pedal, than my G80 does. I don't think it's a size thing. It's just the way each was designed. I don't know that one is better than the other, just different.

So the car decelerates when it downshifts? Isn’t that normal unless you are gunning the engine?

My 2015 Impala decelerates a good bit as does my 2012 rspec, hi compression engines will do just that ! It's a great feature for mountain driving which keeps you off the brakes

When you decelerate with your foot off the gas pedal, the computer shuts the fuel off and adds to the slowing down process
