My 2015 4D 3.8 Ultimate 91.5k miles has been in the shop for almost a month after completely dying on the highway while on a weekend trip.

Had to call Hyundai emergency roadside and the tow brought it to the closest dealer where it's been ever since.

First stab was changing out the starter and spark plugs, which got the car running again but now the engine is struggling on start, car smells of gas, and the check engine light is still on. (Pretty livid because I had to travel to get the car back like 4 hours and it wasn't fixed yet when they said it was ready).

Had them look at it again and they finally got back to me saying the fuel injectors need full replacement (cleaning wouldn't be good enough) and it was going to cost over $3000. Unfortunately fuel injectors aren't covered under the powertrain warranty.

Does anyone have any experience with fuel injector problems on their car? Any advice would be appreciated at this point.

I'm getting tired at this point and even had them quote the car, but it was such a low-ball offer (11k vs 16-18k in good condition, and I still owe about 13k on the car). Kept the car well maintained up to this point and it was perfect until these issues manifested.

That's insane, but it matches with other things that I have heard of them weaseling out of.

I don't see how more than one of them would have failed at once, unless you got some really bad gas, and if that were the case it should be on the gas station's insurance to pay for it.

It's been fueled with either Chevron or Costco gas, exclusively. I just had the 90k maintenance done not too long and the bill has the decarb kit, prob just an additive for the fuel tank. It's also hard for me to believe all 6 are bad all at once.

I'm thinking of just taking it to another place.

I know I would have trouble trusting their diagnosis after the first failed fix.

That sure sounds like a lot of money for six injectors. Are you sure that's all they'd be replacing?

I too would be very skeptical of the expensive diagnosis. Even the original attempt they made is odd. Why is the starter bad if the engine quit while driving?

One would expect a failing fuel injector to start causing a poor running engine and misfires but not spontaneous shutdown.

Even if injectors truly need to be replaced the price seems suspicious. For what it's worth you can get aftermarket injectors for about $50 and up (each). I can't speak to their quality but surely some of the aftermarket stuff is of reasonable quality.

I'd want rock solid evidence that the injectors are an issue. It's interesting how while under powertrain warranty they so often find something that's not covered.

Maybe be a fuel filter? It'll be a hell of alot cheaper than 3k. Did you try another garage?

The starter was covered under an extra electrical warranty I purchased. I was surprised when they said the alternator was fine, but that would've also been covered under that same electric warranty.

The spark plugs were due for changing, I believe the recommendation is at 97.5k, but I doubt that was the issue anyways and they just marked it as an easy maybe to fix/charge/rule out.

Loose electrical connection? Bad battery? Bad fuel pump? These seem more likely causes of sudden engine stoppage.

I'd love to take it to another shop, but the car doesn't seem safe to drive. I might have to figure out a tow truck to bring the car to a different dealership or something so I can at least get evidence there really is something else wrong besides the injectors.

Adding to the story, when I went to pick it up, they were pretty shady about it (plus terrible customer service attitude, despite them being the ones who told me it was ready and it clearly wasn't). It seemed like they either wanted me to just pay for the spark plugs and take the car away, or sell them the car at that laughable price.

Too me it sounds like a fuel problem. Have you notice fuel leaking from under the car or in the engine bay? Do you have the codes its throwing?

No codes and no history of fuel leaking. I can't get a straight answer on what codes were off because again, shadiness. Like he made it sound like he was giving a labor discount with the $3k estimate.

Sounds like a con I would get my car back in a hurry. It sounds like something simple they could fix but want your $$. I know autozone reads your codes for free they might be able to lend you a code reader. Its crazy how they wont tell you the fault codes. I never heard that before. Its like a doctor saying they know whats wrong with you but wont tell you until you get the procedures done.

I'll see if I can get a tow ready to get the car out to a different shop. I feel like I'm not going to have any luck even at another dealership, so I'm debating if I should get it taken to a Firestone or Meineke or something just to get a diagnosis

Ask your friends and neighbors for a good independent shop. May well be worth the cost of a tow truck if not driveable. Needs all six injectors? They all went at once?

OEM fuel injectors can be purchased online for about $173.00 each for the 3.8. I assume that labor is what the main bulk of the expensive to replace the fuel injectors. I would try an independent mechanic who may do the repair for about half the price.

What was the dealer reason for your Genesis needing a full set of new fuel injectors? It seems very odd that all six would be defective; maybe 1 or 2; but not all six on a car at one time.

I would buy a scan tool and replace the defective fuel injectors myself.

First off, no way did six injectors go bad at once, and you sure didn't need a starter. DO NOT GO BACK TO THAT DEALER! I see one online seller getting $77 each for Hyundai injectors. So they are getting $2K+ for maybe eight hours worth of labor??

When it 'completely died', did it start running rough and progressively get worse then die? Or, did it shut off like you hit the starter button to turn it off? Did the lights on the dash flicker, go off?

If the car just shut off, you have an electrical issue. Battery good? Terminals tight and no corrosion? It could be a fuel pump or control module, wire shorted or broken or the engine computer, Cam or Crank position or other fuel related sensors.

Did the dealer scan for codes and tell you what they found? Find a reputable electrical specialty shop to scan.

They just said all 6 were so clogged, cleaning won't do anything. But I get the feeling they didn't even look or there's a bigger issue they're trying to hide behind non-warranty. Also the intake manifold gaskets they quoted should be covered under CPO powertrain warranty.

I have a tow scheduled to bring it to an independent shop that does full injection work tomorrow, if that's even the issue.

Car lost acceleration power and the gas pedal stopped working pretty much. I got lucky and pulled over to the side of the road without any problems. Miraculously, the car still had enough power to adjust on the shoulder. All electrical worked fine up until the tow truck came.

Electric still worked, but after the tow the engine wouldn't even turn and the power steering and brakes were completely out. Car pretty much slammed into the pavement from the tow truck. Had to use a ton of effort just to steer the car to the side walk as the tow truck driver pushed the vehicle.

When the vehicle was "fixed", turning the engine was rough and sputtering, but it eventually turned. Smell of gas and check engine light was on. I didn't drive it off the lot, instead I told them to look into what else could be wrong because the car clearly isn't fixed.

And again, before all this happened there was no indication of any issues with the car. Strong start, no smells, good acceleration, and I just had the 90k maintenance and oil done about 2 months before.

To add to the story, when I first went to pick up the car they were suspiciously taking a while and there was a sign on free appraisal. I talked to a sales rep who went to do the appraisal and he came back like "uh.. I don't think your car is fixed". And that's where I got the 11k quote from lol.
