  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Unfortunately, I work near an area with known issues of car thefts. I am concerned about the wheels on my GV70. My GV came with one set, considering adding another set. I know these are not hard to come off, but each set added, could at least slow them down for a bit. Has anyone tried this?

Absolutely in a high crime area Id go for it! Just make sure they use different type keys so if the thieves did have one type of key maybe you could screw”em up with a second different style key.

The "locks" that came with my G70 from port option list are defeated with a tool from AutoPro parts store. Find something better than that. I like the idea of mixing locks.

The issue, is the actual wheel locks are the new style of a bolt and then lug. Please below. BMW started this trend and I guess all manufacturers are now doing so 🤷. I have a custom order sent in to Advanced Wheel Lock for a new set of almost theft proof wheel locks. Might pick up another set for the time being while those are getting designed.

For those curious about Advanced Wheel Locks, please the link.

I have send them emails and IM on Facebook and still no response to my question if they make on for the GV70

Any determined professional car thief will get them off. They can be cracked in seconds. And even as new ones come out, they have more motivation to find a way to defeat. The locks will discourage the the non-professional "generalist" thief who might be thinking its a quick buck.

I want to buy a new set of wheel locks for my new gv. Does anyone know the oen part number or the comparable?

Those are not wheel locks. They are simply spline bolts and while less common than standard bolt, the spacing between the groves is not special or keyed...and keys are easy to get. The spline bolts supplied with my aftermarket wheels are from FAST but don't have the specs.

Are wheel locks necessary, I mean, do people still steel them?

I guess it depends on where you live and park.

I don't know of anyone that had wheels stoen in 60 years of driving. Others have though.

I believe that it is true that a professional (full-time every day) wheel thief could find a way to remove the Advanced Wheel Locks, however, without using additional equipment it would not be easy. Time and noise are not on the side of the thief so deterrents in any form work to an extent. Just as old-style car break-in tools could be bought at Dollar stores so the current style of irregular-cut security lug nuts and bolts, the tool to undo these is readily available. Perhaps the result will be the same if the Advanced Wheel Locks style becomes popular. For now, I will give it a try as I think the black lug bolts with matching security locks look better than the OEM bolts on the painted 21" wheels of the GV70. I do not live in a high-crime area but I drive around and could find myself in one quite easily.

Last time I checked (about a year ago) they did *not* although the website will happily put you to a product page if you select GV70 as your vehicle.

I wrote the guy and he apologized and said he'd fix it....

Except that I would need black ones, these were proven the most difficult to beat. Not impossible. But most difficult across a dozen or so competitors.

I watched a video where a guy just hammers a socket onto the locked nut and removes it in about 10 seconds. Noisy but quick...

True. Most can be defeated by a 22pt socket and a hammer.

The Advanced Wheel Locks brand are however a spike-shape of a much harder metal (or alloy) and cannot be defeated this way. To beat them, you need to weld a nut to the top first (also difficult due to the metal they use) then attack the nut. Four times...

Sadly, they don't yet make bolts only nuts. Could probly find a skilled welder or metal shop who could weld a rod of proper tensile into one and make it a bolt... but that just reeks of unnecessary effort.
👍

So does anybody know of a supplier of quality Black Chrome wheel bolts? I found these on Amazon Amazon.com. They should fit but input welcome. I'll worry about the security later.

My aftermarket wheel supplier got me black spline bolts from FAST. Only buy from reputable brands that have forged bolts that are min class 10.9, and better still 12.9, for strength.

Are you just replacing the OEM nuts and still using OEM wheels? If so, there are black caps you can buy on Amazon. This is the 2nd winter i am using them on my OEM bolts for OEM 19" wheels i use only in winter months. They look fine and have not come off.

I started off looking for security bolts and settled on Advanced Wheels but they only have nuts right now. I found some black chrome bolts on Amazon both splined and standard heads. I approached the dealer to ask if they would be correct but no comment. The spec I fount said the bolts were 60 degree chamfer but the OEMs didn’t appear to be a clean angle. Any clue?

OEM rims are BALL (GV70, anyway...)
