Got my 1st rock chip today😡 My experience with the windshield mfg is I had one on my MB. It is lousy glass, chips easy! Anyone else have problems with their windshields chipping easy?

Someone here had a chip in their windshield and they mentioned that bc of the tech in the windshield that we should make sure it would be covered under our comp insurance coverage. Can't find the the thread or specifics.

My Mazda CX 5 went through 4 windshields all for cracks from rocks thrown up by the car in front of me. But your insurance shown cover the repairs

Terribly sorry, I have a hard time to understand what you are trying to say here.

You had experience with the MB (Mercedes-Benz, I assume) manufacturer or the glass that was supplied by them. And you had one ? You had one what, a windscreen, a chip or a manufacturer.

I assume you mean a chip. Correct ?

If it was a chip in the Mercedes-Benz windscreen your conclusion is it must be lousy glass because it chips easily. How do you define “easily”. Tell us more please. Whatever chipped the glass, was it something the size of a rice corn or walnut ? How fast were you traveling etc. Would be hard to tell exactly what chipped the glass, wouldn't it. Therefore to say “it is lousy glass, chips easily” is not a qualifying statement particularly if you say it was only one. “One” of an unidentified object that struck your windscreen does not expose a weakness.

Can you tell us who the manufacturer of your “easy to chip” windscreen is ? You can identify this by the acid-stamp-identification-mark, to be found on a corner of the screen, which has to be applied by law to any safety glass.

I really like to know.

I wondered about that because I test drove 2 cars and saw 1 used GV70 - and all had at least 2 rock chips in the windshields. All 3 of them...that seems really strange for vehicles that aren't even a full year old yet...

Seems to be getting more common. My daughter just got a new windshield in her 6 month old Honda. I have to wonder it the quest to lose weight for mpg rating is making thinner, weaker glass.

I did wonder that...but at the same time, these vehicles are so quiet, so it is confusing. I'm hearing windshields are probably $1,200+ too...!

I'm on a few other lists and chips/crack issues are mentioned frequently. A family member bought a new G70 and
within a month, rock chip. City driving.

I had to replace my windshield due to a crack from rock impact. Safelite did it for around 1,000 if I recall.

Reviving this old thread but also just got a chip from a small impact. Not looking forward to dealing with it. Gonna reach out to my service advisor about ETA and then call the insurance company.

If just a chip may be repairable. I'd trust a good glass company over the dealer.

Thanks! I’ll definitely check that out. It is small.

On Long Island the roads here have never been worse in my 40plus years of driving.... The amount of rocks on the road from potholes, cracks etc... would probably have something to do with the windshield chips..... I have 2 work vans, two Buicks and the Genesis... they all chip and crack about the same..... maybe barking up the wrong tree?

I don’t think there’s anything inherently low quality of about the Genesis glass. That being said this is the first car in 17 years of driving I’ve ever had a chip in.

I've actually noticed that the windshield on the GV70 seems to be "grainier." When the light hits the glass a certain way, it is not as clear as my other cars.

With that said, just a few days ago, I was driving up I-87 where they were doing road work. I heard a crack on the windshield. Looked, didn't notice anything (it was night time).
The next morning, there was about 6 inch crack on my windshield. 2 days later, the crack grew to about a foot.
Now it's a little larger. I have an appointment with Safelite in 2 days. Fortunately, in NYS, we have to have comprehensive glass coverage.

Been through a lot of windshield chips. IMO, most are caused by big trucks. And I think chips are related to "location, location, location". Spent 25+ years in King County in Washington and picked up a lot of chips. Nearly 3 years now in Vancouver WA and not a hint of a chip.

Be sure to check if safelight has the software to do the sensor calibration. Others have run into the issue aand had to go to dealer to get the calibration done. Some had to pay for the calibration because the insurance would not pay 2 separate claims.

They apparently do.
I made an appointment and when you input car info, they will only do in the garage (drop off), rather than mobile installation so they can do calibration. They specifically mention this.
I've actually had my Audi Q5 done at Safelite in the past with calibration also

I understand this. I was just saying that there have been other forum members that have had problems getting Safelite to do the calibration. One member went through his dealer that had a local installer put the new windshield in at the dealership and then the dealership did the calibration. This was done under one ticket and was agreed upon by the members insurance company.

A few others found out after the install that their Safelite office could not do the calibration and had to take their vehicle to the dealer and pay for the calibration. If your Safelite location can do the calibration, then that is great. Please keep all of us posted.

My insurance company (Wawanesa) will not cover any calibration costs whatsoever. They pay for the glass but I have to pay for full calibration costs.
