  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Having put up with the sorriest shifting transmission in the world I decided to look at trading my Genesis. Since I looked at M-35's when I purchased the Genesis ans I own an I-35, which has a smooth as silk shifting transmission, I started researching the M-37. In a review of the M-37 I read this:" The result is a transmission that always feels slightly confused, sometimes surprised, and rarely goes about its job subtly or unnoticed. Shifts can be jerky; downshifts are usually delayed; the wrong gear at the wrong time can be selected."

The above is a perfect summation of my transmission problems. I have decided that in an effort to increase MPG, the entire industry has screwed-up their transmissions.

I guess I'll drive the cheaper of the worst transmissions and keep the Genesis.

I can't help but agree with you on automatic transmission behavior - =manufacturers set it for mpg versus immediacy, and its not something I'm a fan of.

What have you tried to remediate your transmission issues so far? Are the problems just like what you quoted above?

Yeah, I agree with you guys that the tranny shift sucks.
Never in the right gear when I want to do a lil' 'spirited driving'.
Makes me wanna rip it out and throw in a TR6060 and row the gears myself.

Funny, I thought I was the only one having this issue. Its nothing crazy but it is annoying at times.

My Genesis Technician tells me that there is a TCU update for the Aisin V6 Transmission. You may want to get your Genesis Tech to update your TCU.

(A previous car I had, with an Aisin Transmission had to be updated in order to make it shift correctly - not the same problem you have).

I asked about updating the TCU for the ZF V8 Transmission as I have the "problem" of no power when feathering the gas, as very very low speeds (2 or 3 mph) and the transmission shifts to 2nd. No TCU updates for the ZF.

I find the transmission early-shifting annoying at times when I want to punch it, but if I'm honest with myself, that's probably about 1 percent of the time. I don't mind the optimization as it can mostly be defeated by auto-stick.

The problem with this (on the ZF Transmission) is you start through an intersection, then you take your foot off the gas for a second, then when you decide it is safe to continue through an intersection, you punch it again, and "Blahhhhh", almost nothing for a second or two. THIS IS DANGEROUS, because cars can still be coming at you from the side street. Takes a second or two for the engine/transmission to "catch" but meanwhile, the car coming at you from the side is getting close. Asked my Genesis Technician, whom I trust, about this and if there were any TCU updates, and he said no updates on the ZF.

(I may have to start using Auto-Stick more when at intersections, just so the transmission stays in 1st)

Thank God I'm not the only one that thought something was quite not right with the V6 transmission. I should ask about this at the delaership.

There are a couple other threads about transmission shifting as well. I can agree with all of you that something feels a little out of sync between gears 1 and 2. Sometimes I can find myself looking for more power and the Genesis not being the the appropriate gear.

Some people have bought a "sprint booster" and says there is a noticeable difference. Not sure how much it really helps though. I think my next purchase for the Genesis will be the sprint booster though.

Interesting!

I guess I am the lucky one as I have not had the problems that you describe. My Gennie has the smoothest transmission shifting and sometimes it is so difficult to feel it changing gears. Maybe mine had the TCU update done before I bought it but I doubt it as it was bought in Nov, 2008.

I hope you can get your problems resolve with your dealer.

My Oct 2008 build date V6 Genesis has no transmission problems either, although it did take several months for it to "learn" my driving habits.

I suspect that the above posters with "transmission problems" really just have lead foot disease (or maybe there are multiple people with different acceleration habits driving the car?). Automakers are pushing us to drive more fuel efficiently, so they can meet the CAFE requirements, and that does include shift points on the transmission.

I think you are probably correct in your assumption that we all have different driving habits. I am willing to bet though, that if the CAFE standards weren't in place the joy of 1st and 2nd gear would be like my 1998 F150!

Seriously though, I get 18/19 MPG with my F150 (V6) and there sure as hell aint no Gov't regulated standards the way there are today.

Also, on another note: gears 1 and 2 seem a little out of sync when you DO NOT use your "lead" foot. It only happens when you puss it. I am far from a lead foot driver, but it seems you need to be when you want to get through gears 1 and 2 smoothly. I am only talking about the V8 Genesis as well. I don't mind this little inconvenience.....

Do you know if the factory could reset the "brain" tranny to relearn? I bought my car used and the previous owner drove about 4000mi before I took over.

If you disconnect the battery or the correct fuse, you might be able to get the transmission to go back to default settings. That was my experience with Toyota transmissions (Toyota owns about 50% of Aisin). Don't know about ZF (V8) tranny. But the default setting are not very good IMO, and my V6 Aisin tranny smoothed-out only after several months of driving.

Did a little research on the sprint booster and came across this technical write up by Dick Bipes an interesting read for someone who is going to consider buying this.
