The Battery Died in my Genesis GV80

Thanks for the feedback…I do appreciate it.
I’m going to try to call someone to come get things connected to this loaded GV80, show me how I need to connect it up to keep it running.
You’re right. I’m not a car jockey any more and would never have spent $80k for a car that I need to mess with like this one. Too bad…it’s nice. But…
I’ve been pretty spoiled with the top of the line cars I’ve had for many years and dealer service has always provided help, loaners and such when I’ve needed them. The Hyundai service experience is not at the level I expected when I bought the GV80 and all the service extension packages. I thought it was a set it and forget it all-inclusive quality service package. Disappointing to find out that isn’t necessarily true.
This little battery episode left me without a car for 5 days…Mon-Friday last week! The Genesis Roadside Service took 3 days, they couldn’t jump the car even with 2 of their power chargers hanged together. Then they had to figure out how to get the car out of my garage and that required special equipment.
The dealer said they were very busy and couldn’t look at the car right away. That part took 2 days just to replace my battery which tested non-functional. That didn’t make sense either.
Again, thanks for taking your time to respond. Maybe the dealer should send someone out to set us up with the cables, pigtails, quick connects, or whatever, that an old guy needs.
…or, would they buy it back deducting for our 1500 miles?

If the battery is dying is a week, there is a major issue with the battery, car, or simply put a significant flaw in the design. Many people leave cars for 1-2 weeks with no ability to charge (e.g. at airports), so there is no way any intelligent engineer would design a car to kill batteries in a matter of days. I've left my GV80 Prestige for a couple of weeks with no issues, as one would expect. I would push back on any dealer indicating that a modern car should be expected to not start after a few days.

How did they get it off the ship when it was transported across the ocean for a few weeks if the battery dies after ~4 days, or out of the lot for a test drive when it sits for more than a few days? Do they have battery tenders on all the cars in their lot?

This is not a normal "feature".

These cars have technologies which are active even when the car is off. It is constantly being pinged. The vast majority of my customers who have battery issues drive their cars the least. Your problem is you may not drive frequently enough. If this doesn't suit your lifestyle, consider battery maintenance or a different car.

Yes valet service is generally for maintenance, sometimes repairs depending on what needs to be done and the condition of the vehicle.

Valet service is not mobile repairs or roadside assistance. My driver cannot drive away in your car that is incapacitated. If you tell your handyman your roof is leaking and he shows up to find a tornado has taken off the top of the house....what do you expect to happen?
So your saying out modems no longer shut off after 4 days or so? Connected services had told me remote start was only good for 4 days or so and then car goes into sleep mode of sort and modem sleeps until car is started to wake things back up for remote ability.

So it goes into sleep mode and wouldn't drain the battery. That is a good design. If the battery is dead in a week without driving. Something is wrong with the car or battery, or both. Get it check. Period.

Curious how they got the car out of the garage? Dollies?

I was down for a month and was unable to drive the car. Figured it would be near dead and it was. I put it in the tender to bring the battery to full. Two more times in quick succession if found it near dead with only days passing of it not moving. I'm surprised the car doesn't seem to have a feature most cars have had for nearly two decades when the car shuts down 99% of it's electronics to allow one more start. If it has it, it's not working. The only item I've left connected is my android auto wireless adapter but from what I understand all the USB ports turn off when the canbus goes to sleep. What gives? Maybe just a bum battery? Does anyone know if the factory battery is led acid or AGM? My tender can recondition lead acid batteries. Thanks in advance.

Had similar issue with new GV80 and dead battery. Jumped 2x in 2 days, took to dealership, they found no problem. Doesn't get driven regularly, which might be the Issue.
But a new twist last month- I was away for the month, car locked (maybe helps battery drain?) and in garage. After being away 2 weeks, I received an Email from Genesis Connected Services ”battery level below normal, check that vehicle lights and accessories are off to avoid battery drain”. Being out of town, had neighbor start car and drive it around the block. Was surprised but happy to get the email.
Unfortunately, this isn’t a rare GV80 problem. Service dept let me know it happens regularly with GV80. Have a spare key and a great neighbor who can start it up from a long nap. And I did turn off the wireless charger, was told it can drain, don’t need it anyway.
Still want to hear what others have to say about your posting…thanks!

I have left my car for 9 days without issue. But, I wonder if using the remote start and letting the car idle for 1/2 hour is your away once a week will help keep the battery charged?

IIRC, you have to start the car every four days or it loses contact by modem.

If going away for weeks at a time, battery tender is a must. Not just Genesis, other brands have had similar issues.

I know they said my Audi would not last a month so when I took an extended vacation, I left one of those jumper batteries in the trunk. Well after 4+ weeks the car started fine. But I don't know how much longer it would have lasted.
When I read in the manual not to open and close the trunk more than a few times without the engine running as it could cause the battery to die, I know it would be a problem for this car.

And off I go to buy a battery tender…
Any great recommendations for brand(s) or where/how to connect?

I lay my Jaquar XJL up for the winter. I start it twice for 20 min each time and the battery has never gone dead. I lay it up from November until June.

Any solution if you park at the airport for 2 weeks? Is there a way to shut down all the electronics or at least the power hungry ones.

Just get a CTEK branded battery tender. They have a really nice one for AGM batteries.

For those who park for long period of time, please don't start the car periodically to charge the battery. You're causing considerable wear and tear on your engine. A new battery is far cheaper than a new engine.

dfad - your battery should be perfectly fine for 2 weeks. If you're really worried about it, you could disconnect the negative battery terminal while it sits parked, but you're going to lose vehicle settings of course.

Why would starting your car twice in a week, when your on vacation a few time a year if your car is sitting idle in a parking lot ruin your engine? If I was home, I would start it a lot more often that that?
Iam old, so is there something I am missing?

Cold starts are one of the most damaging aspects of engine wear. Couple that with then letting the vehicle sit without the oil properly circulating, and you've greatly accelerated engine wear.

Use your phone to start it from time to time is all that I know. My Grand Cherokee had a storage mode but it turned off so much I wasn't even about to lock the door with the key fob, only the physical key.

So basically any time you start your car, you are destroying it. Got it
