Also a new electronics system similar to the Microsoft announced with Kia in January.
Note, although there has been talk of an 8-speed transmission and rumors of all Hyundai's moving to direct injection with engine specs published on Korean websites, exact US plans are vague.
For example, the Equus, a 2011 model, is listed with a 6-speed transmission and the same engine as the Genesis V-8. I doubt they will change that midstream before introduction.
There is also a huge leasing advantage by introducing a new model as early in the calendar year as possible. Lease residuals follow the model year. Getting the car out in January or February can result in an extra 8 months before the drop as a model year old. it could be 5 or more residual points. On a Genesis that is over $2k or $50/mo on a 36 mo/lease.
So, I think it is likely there either won't be a 2011 (BMW and VW have done model year skipping) or a very short model year (
Infiniti did that with the new M) followed by a January/February introduction of the 2012 Genesis and the 2012 Equus and maybe Azera a month or so later.
That would also account for the absurdly low 1500 units said to be planned for the first year of the Equus. The first model year may be only 4 months long and they will want to ensure there isn't old inventory when the 8-speed/DI/new electronics 2012 arrives. At $55k people get very picky.
