  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hyundai Bluelink shutting down service

I doubt Genesis/Hyundai would have a problem selling you an LTE Modem...in a brand new car!

Genesis sold me a supposedly high end car with technology they knew would die within 3 or 4 years. You seem to think that somehow that compares to VCR's and floppy disks. I just can't understand where your head is at. But you do you. I'm done trying to get you to understand.
Just curious how did you arrive at this conclusion that Genesis or anyone knew 3-4 years in advance that 3G support will go away?

Because the major carriers warned about this some time (several years) ago.

Hey, I'm not saying it is OK, but technology will phase out. Yes, they should have changed to 4G years ago. Never said otherwise.

As a car buyer, I assume I'm getting a good product that will last a reasonable time. The designers and engineers that work with this stiff every day are supposed to know what is going on and should have recommended the change a long time earlier.

Someone made a bad decision. Either engineers ignored or management did not want to make the change, especially if it added 50 cents to the cost. By the 2015 or 2016 MY this should have been corrected.

You are correct, no excuses for the newer models. Yes, eventually they will be obsolete too.

The Hyundai problem being what it is seems to be an industry problem. I have a 2012 Gen, 3.8 tech package 83k. Great car but I was considering a trade for a 16-18 model. Then I learned about the whole apple car play/android auto issue and now the cellular problem. So I looked at a 2018 Lexus ES350. Guess what same issues. No apple car play and Lexus Enform connected services shutting down in November 2022 on those models. So I did the old fashioned thing when I have "auto stress", I took it to the car wash and did some light detailing of my still quite nice Genesis and will call it a day until I can sort out what I want next and how long will those features live. On another note, look at what's going on in the airline industry. They are having to beg the AT&T and Verizon to delay turning on 5g because of how it may potentially interfere with the aircraft altimeter system and yet all parties involved must have known what was coming and yet here they are. Pretty amazing.

We need to keep the pressure on Hyundai.

Interestingly, Audi looks like they are going to take care of the issue for their owners. See the attached letter from Audi, received yesterday.

That's good to see. If Hyundai wants to play with the big dogs then they need to step it up. From that letter now I am wondering, when the service turns off are the affected Hyundai vehicles going to get a constant error message? That would be really annoying.

Surprised Hyundai execs are probably not happy about all this, either. It will be a revenue loss on paid Connected Services accounts.

I can just imagine that conversation in the boardroom .. "how do you expect me to increase sales of CS when the damn car can't deliver it??".

You don't get an error message when it can't find a cell tower. No reason the lack of service would set anything off.

I was reading an article in Consumer Reports and it seems to indicate that the replacement hardware Audi offers will replace only the crash notification and SOS capability. Hopefully it does offer more than that.

"Audi
Vehicles affected: Audi vehicles that connect to a 3G network will lose connectivity in February 2022. These include the 2016 to 2018 A3 E-Tron; 2013 to 2018 A4, A5, and Q5; 2014 to 2018 Allroad; 2012 to 2015 A6 and A7; 2012 to 2018 A8; 2015 to 2018 Q3; 2012 to 2018 Q7; and 2019 RS5, according to Audi’s website.

The fix: Audi is partnering with a company called Mojio to provide owners with a device that plugs into their cars and allows them to keep automatic crash notification and SOS. Called Motion for Audi Connect, it’s not available yet, but owners can sign up to get more information when it’s released in January 2022. Audi spokesperson Jacob Brown tells CR that it requires professional installation and that the company is contacting customers who are eligible."

4G arrived in 2008 and it's called LTE for a reason. They anticipated just such a problem and came up with the Long Term Evolution (4G). 5G is so closely built on 4G, I wouldn't be at all suprised if the modems for IoT applications could be easily upgraded OTA when 4G sunsets in TWO-THOUSAND-THIRTY!!!

I don't have any skin in the game -- I'm not even technically a (2015) Genesis owner yet and I'd probably never pay for Blue link anyway. But I gotta say, especially the second gen, 2015MY car should've been built on 4G. Seems like putting out a product that's as current as possible would be good general practice.

Then again, I wonder how much of the luxury brand business model is focused on new car leases, where the tech features really only need to work for 2-3 years. How much are they hurting from disgruntling people that haven't brought a new car in 6-8 years? I mean, getting all sanctimonious about never buying another Genesis doesn't mean a ton when that purchase would've been in the late 2020s or beyond. And that's all the real power we wield.

Anyone know the first year model that doesnt have 3g?

Sooo do any Genesis have 5G as of yet?

No car does.

5G did not start coming into service until 2019, in just a couple of cities. Your model year 2023 auto design was being finalized and some production of components started.

Cars are not like cell phones when it comes to updated hardware.

Correct, but it does not scare newer car owners that their service is going away. Accuracy matters.
Do you know if they will ever make it available Again for my twenty fifteen genesis sedan
