  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2015 3.8rwd 5th gear to 6th gear slippage

It works and it does AT reset for Genesis, I have the same tool.
It is good to hear. I wished I would known about it before I bought a XTool D8 scan tool.:(

It didn't work and I contacted the Support team and they custom developed the AT reset function and pushed it to my device. I would say ThinkDiag is a better option.

I just received the Thinkdiag earlier, after some tinkering was able to do the reset.

However...haha...it didn't solve my problem. I did 2 resets and drove around for a bit. I'll give it more time but base on what I've observed, I doubt that's my solution.

Isn't there a certain driving procedure after the reset - drive until in top gear, stop, repeat 5x or something like that...?

There is a procedure. I went through it a few times but still same results.

That sucks.

What was the procedure?
I followed this article.

However there are other articles out there too. Just not sure it does much in situation tho.

Very informative article!!!

Before you go towards AT overhaul, do the AT reset and drive it for about 100 miles. If the issue persists then remove 1 quart of ATF and add 1 quart of Hotshots Shift Restore additive.

Update: I've been driving around with the ravenol oil only for a while now. Same results as my original problem with 6th gear. Of note, with this change of oil (and clean up of the the solenoids with mass air flow cleaner) I was having a rougher gear change with 2nd to 3rd gear. It was definitely revving up higher than previously.

Obviously I like to test things, so I took @Husam advice and add hot shot. haha. I didn't do the full 32 ounces only 16 ish as per the directions on the bottle. 6th gear slippage is the same. But the rough 2nd to 3rd gear is gone. Very smooth from 1-5. Haha. Maybe some other folks may consider adding that Hot Shot to their transmission oil change if having 2-3rd gear problems.

PS...I already ordered the solenoids from Korea. Going to plan on changing 4&OD, 35R, and 6. I ordered the update part from most recent TSB. Crossing fingers.

All the best. Keep us posted. You could have added the full 32 oz bottle of Hot Shot's Secret Shift Restore but you've done well. Fingers crossed.

I would try the OEM hyundai fluid. Its what i did had no issues. I have a tool to reset the trans adaptive values but wasn’t necessary.

This is why I firmly believe it is paramount to ONLY use the OEM fluid and never aftermarket with transmissions. If its some cheap clunker yea id risk it but a car like this? Nope. I’ll spend the extra for the OEM fluid.

If the Thinkdiag can program keys and modules, yes it is the better option for sure.

However, my XTool D8 paid for itself for over half the cost today when I programmed a new key for my Lexus RX350 that I bought used with only one key per the dealer that sold it to me. I bought a new uncut smart key off Ebay for about $60 and used the D8 to program the new key and forget the other keys assigned to the car that may be held by the dealer that sold me the car or previous owners.

Lexus charges about $500 to buy and program a new smart key. The Xtool D8 cost me about $800.

It seems like your transmission need the new shift solenoids located in the TSB that is suppose to address hard shifting.

This is a revelation to me and TSB symptoms match my problems exactly. For the record I have 106M miles. Dealer “changed” fluid 9 months ago but they only do drain and fill. No real changed noticed, now much worse. Of course no mention of these TSB. 2015 3.8 AWD original owner. Hopefully they will support this, but it doesn’t appear so. Thanks to the forum for all the support as usual.

No problem.

The Hyundai dealership techs and parts clerks seem to not be that experienced with working on 2015+Genesis/G80 sedans for some reason. If you had a Sonata the service techs would probably know every issue and TSB about those cars, but the 2015 and newer Genesis/G80 sedans are pretty trouble free "mostly" and are rare cars I assume for the techs to work on.

I am sure that Hyundai service departments have a few knowledgeable techs that are familiar with the Genesis/G80, but I bet that they do not work on a 2015+ Genesis/G80 often. However, many of the older 2015 model are clocking some high mileage(over 100k), so the dealerships are probably just now starting to work on them and learning what to look for.

The dealer service department will most likely support the TSB since you will have to pay for the repair or atleast a portion of the repair, unless you get a good will no cost repair through Hyundai corporate. The dealership usually make a request for any discounts for TSB to corporate who may or may not help foot the bill or a portion of it.

TSB are not the same as recalls. TSB just tell the service departments about a certain problem to address when a car comes into the service bay and how to correct it like any other paid repair, but TSB do allow for customers to receive some assistance in the repair cost since the cause of the issue is usually a design flaw; not normal wear and tear.
