  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Tapping noise for about 30” only on cold start. Dealer said its normal engine being primed. With what? Fuel? Oil?

Oil. It seems to be an issue with the oil to the cams draining away when it sits for an hour or more, then it takes a few seconds for the oil to make it back up there after starting it. I don't know that it is actually a problem though.

Ok. Thanks for the reply. That’s not good. That means metal on metal. Been told it may be fuel pump priming high pressure lines. Why in the world with a manufacture make an engine that sounds like it’s starving for oil for 30 seconds every morning when you started up? That absolutely makes no sense.

It's not metal on metal. It's excess oil that drained away, everything is still coated with plenty of oil. It's just not swimming in it. Take your dip stick and see if all the oil will ever drip away from it to the point where it's bare plastic/metal

The 3.3 engine does not have hydraulic lifters, they are solid. When cold you can hear normal tappet noises while oil circulates thru everything and valve clearances adjust with temperature changes of the engine so lash gets zeroed out. Been lots of prior discussions here on engine noises at startup, consider it a design feature.

Solid lifters. I did not know they were back I remember back in the day before hydraulic ones, you had to adjust those damn things all the time. I guess they improved the design.

They've been back since at least 2000. I think they offer more precise valve timing and the possibilities of higher RPMs in interference engines.
