Swap head unit

Hello,
I want to swap my 2016 3.8 head unit with something newer. It is not the ultimate.
How hard is it to change? Has anyone done it? Which one did you use? I want wireless apple car play. The main reason I want to change it is the unit is starting to lag really bad.

Let me know if you have a suggestion.

Newer Hyundai/Genesis head-units will not swap in.
Newer Genesis head-units still do not have native wireless CarPlay.
You can add a $100 (or less) wireless CarPlay adapter to your existing unit.

Any reason they start lagging super bad?

My guess (and it is just a guess) is issues with the hard drive. I think there are some places that replace these or otherwise repair.

I turn on the car and I get the spinning dial for about 30 seconds

So on boot up - I dont think the 3.8's have a "hard drive" per se. I think 6gb of solid state memory.

I really dont know what you could do to alleviate that. Have you done a map update recently? If not, that could possibly help "refresh" some of the OS files.

Hard reset, maybe? There should be a small button that you can access w/a paper clip....

That's correct. CarPlay is possible on the 8" (an update added it a few years ago), but not on the 9.2" G80 before 2018.

And he states he doesn't have the ultimate so the update will add it for him so no need to add a wireless car play adapter.

If he wants wireless CarPlay, then he will certainly need that adapter, just like I use. If he only wants wired, then no adapter needed. Note that anyone with a system that still does not support CarPlay will not be able to use the wireless adapter either. It only works with systems that support wired CarPlay.
So far, no Genesis models have wireless CarPlay builtin.
