  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Well, I checked the oil level and it appears to be full. So, does a failed oil pump seem to be the most logical culprit?

No.

Many threads on this. None of them oil pump related. Last page of this thread is the best working theory I've seen yet (flooded cylinder):

Thanks, but I fear it's something worse than all of those incidents. The burning metal like smell was terrible. Anyway, it's at a shop now. The CEL was on, so maybe there is a code for what happened.

Yeah the startup misfire doesn't typically set the MIL and throw a code. It might flash the CEL for misfire, but it typically doesn't stick.

Sorry to say you have something else wrong with your car than what is typical for the "shake rattle and roll on startup" fault.

Keep us posted. Also consider investing in a basic code reader and phone app. About $25 combined.

Thanks, I just picked the car up from the shop. They couldn't find anything wrong with it, saying they started it and the rattle went away pretty quickly. I think what happened, which my wife mentioned to me, was that the car sat in the garage for several days without being cranked up. And apparently more lubricant than normal must have left the top of the engine. So, when she started it yesterday morning, the rattle and clattering was quite pronounced and alarming. They also said there were no current codes. It's running like a top now.

Incidentally, a good thing that came out of the visit to the shop is that they observed that, finally, with 140,000 miles on the car, the front brake pads were down to one millimeter and the rear pads were down to 5mm. So, I went ahead and got new front pads and rotors installed. I've never heard of a car going that far with the original brakes.

They also told me that all eight front control arm bushings were worn and needed replacement. But the catch with that is that the price for all eight would be $4,200 and Kelly Blue Book says the car has a $4,500 trade-in value!o_O

I hope that price included labor as well as parts.

See if you can find some replacement control arms with new bushing pre-loaded into them. Sometimes that's almost the same price, or not much more, and generally much easier to install than just the bushing itself. But even with that, that sounds like an astronomical price for suspension work.

Thanks, yes, I think the $4,195 for the front suspension work includes $734.02 in labor. Attached is the work they are proposing to be done. Their inspection write up indicates: "Tech found that the front lower control arm bushings are torn and blown out, needs lower control arms". However, I just drove the car and the suspension seems fine to me.

I believe your takes DOT4 not DOT3 brake fluid.

I would get another estimate. My 2014 Genesis V6 has 198K miles and tracks perfectly while driving and I am still on the original brake pads. The shop keeps telling me the back pads are between 4-5mm, the front pads are still good.

My wife said she thought the car wasn't riding right after we got it out of the shop. I was afraid maybe they monkeyed around with something in the front suspension, so I took it out for a drive. It seems to me to drive just like it did before, with regard to the suspension.

I will say, whatever brakes and pads they installed feel just right, not grabby and not too soft either!

I will be getting replacement rotors and pads soon, would really like OEM because these have done so well for almost 9 years but am also looking into the Power Stop kits. Glad your suspension still working normally.

Thanks, I think my wife just forgot how that suspension is after she had to drive my Enclave while the Genesis was in the shop. Totally different feel. Our Genesis has always had a "bouncy" suspension over any kind of bumpy road, even when the car was new. The car sits very low to the ground and there is just not that much suspension travel there.

I thought my Genesis seemed to float when I first bought it. Came with Michelin tires so the next set was a bit more aggressive Michelin tires which was a mistake, terrible ride. Switched to Continentals and have been happy ever since. The car still "floats" and I am good with it.
