  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I only have 35,000 miles on my 2013 Genesis sedan, with still good tread on the original tires. Tires do not have any cracking or checking from UV rays, because it is garage kept. As far as I can figure out, the TPMS sensors only sends messages to the computer when the car is moving. I'm going to replace my tires next fall because of their age but wonder if the TPMS sensors will last until I hit 70,000 miles. (Another 10 years)

I don't know how long they can last, but they do have lithium batteries in them. The old rule of thumb was a shelf life of ten years. Maybe that has improved?

I wonder what the average mileage is when they finally die?

I suspect that it is more a question of time than mileage.

That would be true if there was a drain on the batteries when the car isn't moving.
It's my understanding that signals are only sent to the computer when the car is moving.

A battery just sitting on the shelf with no external drain still dies, due to internal drain.

Any tire shop shoud be able to scan the sensors and determine how much battery life is left. or get an autel ts508 and scan them yourself. I have over 200K on my 2010 and sensors are still working fine.

Thanks.....That's longer than I thought they would last. 14 years. Is that 200K, miles, or km??

On a side note, I was in Sam's Club the other day and noticed that they listed $5 per tire as the charge for changing out TPMS sensors (you provide the sensor). That seems like a really good price and makes me less concerned about proactively changing them with a new set of tires.

I had my local shop replace my sensors and then their scanner wouldn't recognize them to reset. I was told to take the vehicle to dealer because their system is proprietary. Dealer where I purchased had some issues but supposedly are under new service management so I may take it back. I hate that TPMS light on the dash.

Makes me think that I won't replace them until the tires are worn out.
