  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Year

Genesis Model Type
Genesis G80 Sport
I bought a used 2018 genesis g80 3.3t sport last year at about 45000 miles. The car has been great so far. Had to change the thermostat the first month due to a random check engine light however the car was still driving good.

I just noticed in the manual it says spark plugs should be changed every 40k miles on the turbo engine. On carfax I see no indication that this was ever changed. I wish I would have known before purchasing the car so I could have the dealer do it for free at the time.

I decided that I will let my friend who works at Lexus complete the oil change and the spark plug swap. Few questions.

What spark plugs should I get? Should I go to the dealer and purchase there?

What oil filter should I get? Oem only?

Should I use the lexus synthetic oil or should I purchase my own?

If I purchase my own oil, which one should I get? Mobil one fully synthetic?

I don't have any problem using after market equivalent quality parts that meet or exceed the specifications listed in the Owners Manual. The only thing that may force me to use OEM parts would be to preserve the 100K/10Yr warranty if your car is CPO.

Yes, unless you bought a Certified Pre-Owned that extends the warranty, I would not worry much with trying to meet it. It's 10yr/100k to the first owner, next owners are 5yr/60k and you're at the 5 year mark, or past it if the car was originally sold before Jul 2018. Just use quality parts/components.

I use the Wix oil filters, they work fine, or the OEM - whatever you can find for the price. On the plugs, I'd get whatever the car specs require. I think this is what you need (link below), I'd buy them in advance unless the dealer can get them for you. Don't use something they use on a Lexus.

For oil, again, what the manufacturer recommends - definitely a full synthetic, I use Costco's oil, it's fine. You probably need 5W-30, check your manual. Lexus oil is fine as long as it's full synthetic and the right viscosity.

Thanks for the information. I found everything on the site in the link below. Is this a legit site? Will the plugs have to be gapped of I prefer from here?

You can pretty easily go to a KIA dealer and ask for plugs and an oil filter for a 3.3L Stinger. This is what I've chosen to do as the KIA dealer near me has great parts prices.
The plug gap is less straight forward. If I remember correctly the specs I found online show a gap around .039" but a tighter gap works better. When I replaced my plugs I closed the gap to match the plugs I removed. Don't hold me to this but the gap on the plugs I removed was around .028"

I am 30 miles from a genesis dealership I just figured to order it online if it was a legit site. Are you saying the plugs even when recieving the oem factory plugs needs to be gapped?

Yes mine needed to be gapped. I was unwilling to leave them at the large gap as I recall reading that people had problems with them at the larger gap. I also noticed a sharpie mark on each plug that I removed from the car. I suspect the dealer at some point reduced the gap and marked them accordingly but this is just speculation.

The plugs are not made by Genesis. They can fit many other engines and need different gaps.

Okay. I guess I will start figuring out what is the factory gap specs and also what should the spark plugs be torqued to. Is factory spark plugs the best?

Others have mentioned NGK Irriduim. No personal experience, have not kept a car long enough to change plugs.

Isn't the gap on a sticker under the hood, or did they stop doing that?

I need to go out and check for that. I dont recall seeing it but that's probably because I didn't think to look there for it.

The OEM plug for a 2018 g80 Sport (3.3T engine) is NGK Laser Iridium Spark Plug 97976\SILZFR7A9G. Hyundai part number 18852-09070. When I did mine a few years back I could not find them online and had to go to "stealership". I recall ~$25 USD each.

They come pre-gapped at 0.036". Manufacturer specs are 0.0315->0.0354. Use a gapping tool. It is very easy to damage the iridium tip.
Torque these plugs at 25 N*M per NGK website.

The plugs are significantly cheaper at rockauto. Is there a reason why I should by the more expensive plug from the dealership? Are the plugs from rockauto the same exact plugs as the dealer?

They could be exactly the same thing, or they could be counterfeit. Others that I know have reported receiving the wrong branded parts in the correct branded boxes from them before.

I've never bought their plugs, just OEM wiper blades. I buy my filters from RockAuto.com. It's a good deal if you buy 3-4 at a time, as they charge shipping. But yes they sell OEM equipment.
