  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Okay, so I know this is a common problem and there are probably many threads on this, but the rubber for the trunk switch on the back of my vehicle finally wore out.

The dealer wants like $200+ to fix it. So my question, can I just duck tape the part where it broke off and cracked and forget it? Will that protect everything from the elements?

Next, how hard would it be to replace myself? Also, does it put the backup camera at risk for failure having this rubber piece broken and exposure to the elements?

Any help is appreciated!

The part costs about $40 and replacing it is not difficult, took me about an hour. You can reuse the same camera, no need to replace camera. Duct tape may work briefly but it's tacky and may get sticky.

Thanks for the reply. Is the backup camera at risk for failure because of this rubber being broken? Or is it well enough protected from the elements from other things? Also can you share the link to the part and also a write up or tutorial how to do it?

The release mechanism and camera are both at risk if the rubber is missing especially in harsh weather driving.
Below is a link to one of the diy threads.

Here is the part on ebay for $32

Just replaced mine this weekend.

I'm not particularly handy, but I would have been irked if I paid $200+ for now easy it was.

The DIY instructions are spot on and I had no issues replacing it.

Did you use the diy instructions in another post here or another set of instructions?

Update: finally got around to replacing it. Paid a guy at work to do it (I work at a car dealership) and it took him like 25 min. I watched him for most of it. The hardest part was pushing the new part in and getting the trunk lining on and off without damaging the plastic.

Everything is good now. Sav
