  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

How do you get better fuel economy out of the G70 3.3 V6?

Not that it's really bad but it would be nice to hit the gas station less often. What do you do to get better gas mileage?

Keep the car in Eco mode and use cruise control as often as possible. I've owned mine since March and I've never achieved more than 27mpg/day average.

After four years and 28k miles, that's about the best I've gotten as well.
Drive downhill most of the time, haha.
When I first got the car, I drove in Sport mode most of the time and was lucky to get 19mpg in mixed driving. Thankfully Eco mode in this car doesn't suck the way it did in my last 3 series. (Of course the 3 series got better mileage in any mode.)

I'm surprised you guys are able to get 28mpg, my average is around 20mpg mixed.

I mainly drive in comfort though, ECO is just not for me, I find that I always have to hit it harder just to force it to downshift, it really likes to stay in high gears even when I'm clearly losing speed and need to downshift.

I have been trying to drive more economically recently, but I feel like in order to get 28mpg I'd have to drive like a snail lol

27mpg is the best I ever achieved; I'd say my average is probably about 22-23mpg.

I agree with you about ECO mode. It does save gas but it's like driving a Prius with the "heavy" gas pedal. People should not buy this car if good gas mileage is your goal. Lol.

Is Smart mode available to you? Automatic adjustment-ECO/COMFORT/SPORT

Don't get me wrong, 28 was my best after four years, on a long drive on a flat highway.
My normal avg in ECO with mixed driving is about 23mpg. Comfort drops it to about 21 and Sport drops it to about 19.

It is, but I've never tried it. When I drive I usually either want to be a race car driver or just mellow. Do you recommend it?

Like it better than full-time Eco. Acceleration better than eco but good gas mileage

21 3.3 AWD average over 23k miles has been 22 mpg. Several long cross country trips it'll do 28mpg all day long at 85mph. I've had it reading as high as 33mpg. . They always read high but it still calculated to about 30.You can actually get better mileage without the cruise control
Hooning will get it in the low teens even single digits if you're real aggressive. Still love this car after 3 years.

I'm averaging around 24mpg on my current tank, and that's all city driving (though not in traffic). I use eco mode and coasting whenever it kicks in. The real key is looking at the road and traffic signals way ahead and planning accordingly. The idea is to keep a consistent speed and brake/accelerate as little as possible. There are many times where I see the light red half a mile away, i let off the gas, and by the time i'm there I never touched the brakes and my speed has only dropped a little.

Outside of sports mode, you will not see any difference between comfort and eco mode unless you are driving long distance. The MPG that you get is primarily affected by your driving habits and road conditions. For example, if you are always flooring it and braking hard, you will see lower numbers compared to accelerating more gently. You can greatly improve your fuel economy by learning to finesse that gas pedal.

Here are some practical things you can do to improve your MPG...
- Be gentle on the gas pedal to keep your RPM low--apply only enough pressure to get going or maintain speed
- Minimize braking
- Stay in the sweet spot of your car's speed/fuel curve.
- Do not idle your car longer than a few minutes
- Use your car's MPG meter, if available, to help you spot where you can improve.
- Avoid heavy traffic
- Avoid long uphill drives
- Avoid using cruise control unless you are on a mostly level road
- Bonus: Reduce your car's weight, such as by downsizing your wheels if possible.

The 3.5L AWD G80 is rated at 19 combined MPG (16 City/25 Hwy), but I can get 24 MPG on average if I put in a little effort to drive conservatively, and that is with 80% of my commute being heavy traffic. I can easily hit 30+ MPG on the highway if traffic was not an issue. The 19 combined MPG is actually pretty accurate for that car otherwise.

In my experience, you do get better mileage in Eco compared to Comfort, even more so in mixed driving than highway cruising, for two reasons. First, it upshifts sooner to keep the revs down, and likes to keep them around 1500 rpm. Secondly, it enables Coast, which I've found can really improve your mileage.
