  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Window Trim Discoloration

I'm having the same problem, but only on driver side & yes I did have ceramic coating. Goes in next month for service so I'll find out what they say at that time.

Any update from your dealer? I have the same issue and want to know if others are getting it corrected under warranty.
I am still waiting on a different part called the liftgate "REAR TRANSVERSE TRIM ASSEMBLY" to come in. Was hoping it would be here by now but will go in tomorrow and follow up on repairs and part delivery. BTW, My GV70 discoloration is noted on window trim on both sides, front and back.

Just an FYI, I have a small amount of Meguiars Rubbing Cmpd whish worked but to polish the entire care and tape off the paint and window would take at least half a day by hand and with my luck, it would come back so I am pushing for warranty R&R

Taking my g70 dynamic in tomorrow. They are supposed to buff the discoloration out. I have heard from many that the treatment will remove the blemishes along with the smoke tint, leaving you with true chrome window trim and smoke chrome on everything else. I’ve also heard a few horror stories from folks who have had the trim replaced but done poorly with gaps and misalignment. Any body have experience with either? I’m wondering if it’s best to just have true chrome that lines up vs smoke chrome that may look misaligned and shoddy. I’m also wondering if the reason the driver side, particularity the front fades the most is because that’s where the bulk of washer fluid lands when cleaning the windshield?

This isn't a Genesis thing. We've had this happen with Acura, Infiniti, and Lexus, too. A friend of mine owns a body shop and he tells me that this is from the harsh chemicals in car shampoos and detailing products. Especially, if you're taking your vehicle thru a Laserwash, etc. The plastic "chrome" coating is compromised from these chemicals.

I have a 2022 GV70 and a few months ago I noticed a discoloration on the metallic trim around the windows. To me it was more of a patina that would come off when I used my fingernails on it. The dealer service rep said it was a discoloration of the trim that could be removed with a chemical and rubbing. This process took most of the day. The cleaning did some good but some discoloration remains. And the service tech did a messy job which I had to re-clean.

Has anyone else had this problem??

I think the trim is defective and shouldn't discolor or form a patina in a little more than a year.
Frank I'm having the exact same problem with my 70 sports prestige trim is getting worse and worse by the day and my vehicle stays in the garage, and never been in any horse weather like snow etc I really even drive it 2022 with 7800 miles

Yes I have the same issue with mine as well.

Hmm. You would think for a 55k car, Genesis would look at the molding issue. There is a service bulletin where Genesis will either buff the trim or if that doesn’t work, replace the trim. Update on my end, the buffing removed the blemishes but did remove much of the shadow effect on the trim. Against the other parts on the car that have the shadow trim (handles, side slit, grille), the window trim is nearly pure chrome in comparison. Nobody would notice, but I do. Cheap plastic and poor finish. Car and Driver reviewed the gv70 last month and had a pullout blurb on the issue. Dealership told them it comes from the car wash. I have a 2004 Acura that survived PA winters and the chrome is still like new so Genesis’ issue and solve is a real let down.

Definitely a know issue. I started seeing it on my 3.5 Sport Prestige and I mentioned it at my last service. They immediately ordered a new set with no questions and said "I'm surprised they haven't issued a recall notice on this." Apparently, they've done quite a few replacements. My concern is that they are just going to replace it with the same product, which will discolor in time as well.

And this replacement is quite expensive. Definitely do it while under warranty.
I wonder if they're going to put the same defective part back on.

Have never had my 2019 in a car wash or used a rag to wash. My trim looked like someone took steel wool over it. The funny thing g it's just the side window trim

I ultimately was able to get Genesis to replace the window trim on my 2022 GV70. They are aware of it being a wide spread issue but no recall involved. I do not think Genesis will do anything to RR the molding on their own. It took Genesis a day and a half to replace the trim on both sides. I am told (BY GENESIS) the culprit is the protective tape or film they apply to the trim during transport from the factory. During the pandemic many vehicles sat outside for long periods of time and as a result the constant UV ray exposure on the protective film ultimately damaged the trim. They also say it can be polished out with rubbing compound but it supposedly returns. Just get it replaced FOC so it does not affect resale.

weird I have the same problem on my 2024 gv70 sport prestige. It's made in Alabama and I got vin 951. I wouldn't think it was sitting longer then 1-3 months max.

This was my thinking based on Genesis dealer. Long term UV exposure could of happened during pandemic due to shipping/supply chain delays from ROK. I had to wait a long time to even see any GV70s during 2022 and options were limited. I have no answer if yours was manufactured in Alabama w/o delays.

I'm in Toronto and have had my GV70 Sport Plus since July 2021 (one of the earlier delivery dates in Canada). The trim has discolured around all doors. I had ceramic coating applied when vehicle was brand new. I've raised it with the dealer who are saying it is the result of car wash detergents building up if they're not rinsed right away. They say it causes a build up causing the original colour to "go away". They've offered to put me in touch with providers to have it polished. I see that is an explanation that has been provided elsewhere but I remain skeptical of that explanation. Not just because it seeks to avoid warranty cost but because only the trim around the doors has been affected. The trim just behind the rear doors looks like it should and there are clear and straight demarcations between the good and bad trim sections (See photos below. One from each side of the vehicle). These demarcations are at pretty much the exact same location on each side of the vehicle. I'm certainly no expert but the bright line change in the condition of the trim suggests something was removed or not applied where it should have been.

I've raised this with the dealer who, so far, has ignored me. We'll see where it goes but it is disappointing from both vehicle quality and customer service perspectives.

Genesis doesn’t consider that to be a replaceable item under the warranty. They’d sent out a service bulletin to the all or some of the service departments directing them to inform customers to instead purchase some rubbing compound by 3M and use that as directed. I’ve used it and it works perfectly. It’s a tad bit time consuming, but worth it compared to the stains and tarnished look. The product is 3M 36060 Perfect It Ex Rubbing compound."

It does work but a "luxury" SUV should not require this extra arduous maintenance
Yes, what Ulta said. Mine was doing that & I asked about it when it had to go in for recall fuel pump. 2022 GV70. They rubbed it out for me & said it's hard water & to do the 3M compound 36060 on it. And make sure you dry it after a wash. What I find weird is it isn't ALL the trim.

My window trim on both sides was replaced approximately 1 year ago and so far I have not experienced any new trim defects or discoloration issues.

I have a good friend who details on the side, and he sent me a before and after. The trim discoloration is unfortunate, and it happens slowly. I probably just got used to it… But what a difference it can make. I’ll ceramic coat the car, which hopefully will prevent reoccurrence or make it easier to re-shine

All of my trim was replaced under warranty, no issues with my dealer.

Add me to the club :( Washed the car yesterday and the trim at the bottom of the driver's door window is corroded. Ironically almost 4 weeks to the day it went in for its first service.

This issue has been around since at least 2018 on the sport trim on the G70 - I had a number of pieces replaced on mine - and there should have been a fix by now. I'll see what the dealer says this time around. If their solution is to polish it, I'll look to have it wrapped black.
