Hey all,
I've posted a couple of times here in the last couple of weeks since I signed up an ordered my car, but figured I'd formally introduce myself now that I have my G70!
I just took delivery of a 2023 G70 3.3T Sport AWD in Savile Silver and the Sevilla Red interior. I was originally leaning towards either the Cavendish Red (I just loved the deep red) or Uyuni White (because white is pretty forgiving and I actually like white); but my kids really wanted me to get the red interior which led me to the silver. It turns out it's a fantastic silver with a lot of depth and shine! As I'm in Canada, the car is fully optioned; I also ordered the accessory winter 18" wheel & tire package and cargo mat, and picked up a set of Phantom/Tuxmat floor mats. I also bought the 8 year/160K km Genesis warranty, and I plan to keep this car for the duration!
For those of you who care to know a bit about me:
I'm in my early fifties and have always been a car nut - I've had somewhere around 40 cars over the last 35 years of driving, and have generally enjoyed driving hard, tinkering with them and keeping them clean and well-maintained. Since 1994 I've usually had 2-3 cars at any given time (3-4 once I got married), but with the latest fleet I've really slowed down.
I traded in a 2016 Cadillac CTS 3.6 AWD that I had bought new - the car was still low mileage and in "like-new" condition inside and out, but I recently realized that it was 8 years old and likely coming up on a big investment cycle. It was a decision to keep it for quite a few more years, or move on... and I decided to move on. When I bought the Caddy I was originally expecting to buy a BMW 535i xdrive, but I found the handling of the CTS far more athletic and eager and bought it on the spot.
In 2016 I really needed an "E segment" car because it would be the primary family travel car for me, my wife, and our two young boys. Now, even the E cars are tight for the two big teens (particularly for their size 12 & 13 feet) and we figured that all family travel would now be in our F150 which has limo-like space in the back. This really opened the door for me to buy anything as long as it had (real) back seats for short in-city use as a family; this is primarily a winter car for me so it had to have AWD.
After considering AWD versions of the BMW M340/M440i, MB C43 AMG, Audi S4/S5 Sportback, Lexus IS350, Infiniti Q50 RS, and the G70 I found that the combination of looks, performance, materials quality, price, and value offered by the fully-optioned G70 3.3T was incomparable. Each of these cars did one or two things better than the G70 (well, maybe not the Q50) but the G70 was consistently the second best in each aspect putting it first overall.
So far, I LOVE the look of the car inside and out. The interior materials are fantastic, and I love all of the buttons and knobs for direct control over things. My primary gripes with the interior at this time are the literally half-assed instrument cluster, the single USB data port (which is ridiculous when combined with wired CarPlay), and personally I find the steering wheel a little small in diameter and a little thin in girth. On the outside, the front and sides are beautiful, but the back seems like the designers ran out of time - particularly the trunk/bumper cutout, and the expanse of plain black plastic trim around the license plate. I'm also really disappointed that in this class Genesis doesn't offer a selection of wheels - the standard black 19" Sport wheels may appeal to some buyers, but to me they are a little too "boy racer". I prefer the 10-spoke 19" on the lower trims, or even the simpler black 5-spoke on the 1st gen G70.
I'm an active on miata.net (I was an early member when I bought my '92 NA fresh out of university, and I currently have a '99 NB), on Rennlist (PCA member for ~24 years, currently have a 997.2S), Cadillacforums.com, ZHP Mafia (I had a BMW e46 330i "ZHP" and found a phenomenal bunch of guys I'm still in touch with over 8 years after selling the car!) and have been previously active on other BMW fora, on vintage Porsche sites (had a longhood 911 I bought before the run-up in values, restored, and sold to buy the 997), and (as my tag would suggest), Datsun 240Z communities.
For me, a significant part of the ownership experience is the community around it - I'm happy to see so many regular participants in the G70 forum, and I look forward to many years of getting to know all of you, learning from you and sharing our common interests.
