Hyper Silver Wheels --- Paint Peeling

...anyone else experience the paint flaking off in good size pieces of their 18" rims? Not just one wheel, but every one of 'em. Only have 25k miles on my sedan.

My Hyundai service advisor said it's the first time he's seen this. Due to the type of finish (hyper silver?) that they are not able to re-paint. So he hooked me up and ordered a complete new set under warranty. Should make it right.

What type of cleaner do you use? Your dealer/service advisor stepped up for you.

I'd be interested to see what say you use to wash your wheels. I know at times certain car washes are brutal on wheels. Your dealership did step up to the plate by ordering replacements.

...I was using Meguiar's Multi Piece wheel wash. Specifically states it's for anodized or power-coated rims. I think I would've noticed it over time if this was the culprit.

Although I never thought about the automatic car wash. I do use these quite often. The way the paint was peeling off in quarter sized flakes led me to believe it was paint-prep and bad adhesion.

BTW...rims are solild black under the silver. Spotting looked terrible.

I have a very small, pencil eraser sized chip on one of my wheels. Probably from a rock. As noted it is black underneath.

Yerp! I have two wheels that are BAD! The black underneath REALLY shows and I have just not had the time to complain about it.

Yup, me too. Black flecks on all four rims showing through. Sounds like Hyundai may have a systemic flaw on its hands with these rims...

Here are the pictures. 3 of the 4 rims are pretty bad.

Ill head to Hyundai on Friday and see what they say.

It should be obvious that the wheels have never seen a curb and I think I have been through the automated car wash maybe 5 times or so.

Thanks for the pix, Ping. Mine are way worse. The car has gone only to Simoniz, and the tire brushes there don't even touch the rims. No cleaning materials beyond water spray have ever touched the rims. This is definitely a bonding problem with the finish.

Hello everyone..

I thought after seeing this post I should go check out my wheels closely..and here is what I found..took some pics. One picture is of poor quality. Only two wheels are affected. I am quite shocked.

I stopped by the dealer on the way home to see what they thought. They said it might be because of having tires mounted. I would have noticed this since the last time tires were mounted. We agreed to monitor it..and if it gets worse, we will contact the area rep.

Our dealer did say they were headed to Chicago for Equus training in the next few weeks. That's exciting.

It seems as though the paint is brittle. Just rubbing my nail around it caused it to flake just a bit. I am afraid of what they will look like after snow and salt this winter.

I took mine in to the dealership (Ed Voyles), and they took the car and had the rims re-finished. This was about three months or so ago, and they look great.

i took mine to the dealer, and they told me that looks like someone used a wrong chemical on the rim. they will not cover it, since they will have to eat it. they suggest that i wait till next week and speak with the rep. they can decide on what to do. however, the dealer where i got it from will repaint it. i just want them to look like new.

My dealer said...It looks like you have new tires... and blamed it on the tire shop. There is no scrapes though..no gouges...it is the finish...and it just happens to be around the rim. The dealer said I should wait until it gets worse so they have a better case. I changed out my wheels this winter so they haven't had any chance to get worse.

I give a kudo to my dealership. we brought the car in to the dealer, the gave me a loaner for days. The regional rep were there to look and they decided that it wasn't under warranty. however, they will pay for the repair so that I dont have to come out of my pocket. My Genny suppose to be back today. let's hope that the repair person did a good job with it.

in my case, it looks like someone had sprayed acid to clean the wheels. there were a line of lidquid coming down. i dont think that the center wheel cap will peel right?

I have an 09 4.6 model and the chrome on all four wheels is fading off. It's about 50/50 chrome and black. My dealer is suggesting the acid used at drive through car washes is the culprit yet this is certainly not happening to comparable chrome/sport wheels on Lexus, Infiniti or Acura models. Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, did Hyundai honor this as a defect in craftsmanship? Thanks.

My dealer basically told me to pound sand. It wasn't bad when I showed them - it has since gotten worse. Now that my warranty is up - I am SOL.

Once the finish starts coming off...it can come off really easy with your thumb.

There is now a TSB on this issue...but Hyundai basically just blames automatic car washes...and says they will not replace the finish or the wheels if I recall.

At under 400 miles on my 2012 5.0, I had peeling on the left front center cap. The Dealer is replacing it under warranty. Since reading this thread, I will be keeping a close eye on the wheels.
