  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

No Genesis Yet!
Hi everyone,

I finally joined here after learning a fair bit from many useful posts. I am a Canadian living in southwest China. I drive a Rav4 Hybrid E4 which has served me well for more than three years. I am looking at the GV70 as my next car, probably a 2025 model which I can order in about half a year. Everything here is made to order in Korea and then shipped to China with about 3 months advance notice required. I got to test drive the GV70 when visiting Chongqing a few days ago. I liked it very much. There is terrible traffic in that city so I could not exactly air it out, but when I could find a few open stretches, I liked its smooth quiet acceleration.

In China, Genesis only offer the 2.5T engine on both the GV70 and GV80. On the GV70, I think that it will be fine. As the top model offered, I can get the Ultimate Luxury trim with the Preview-ECS, e-LSD, 18-way Ergo seats etc. It has all the luxury/sport bells and whistles. On the winding highways where I live, the Sports+ mode should be plenty hot. This is what I am thinking anyway.

Here is an odd choice that I must make. At Ultimate Luxury trim, real leather seats and mesh inserts with geometric pattern aluminum trim is standard. I can upgrade to either Nappa leather seats and suede inserts with carbon fibre trim, or Nappa leather seats quilted with layered edge mood lighting trim. Same upgrade price (¥8000 = CAD1500) either way; there is no quilted with carbon fibre option. So I am pondering that – and sure, appreciate any thoughts.

Glad to be here. I am learning a lot. Gratitude to the Admin for creating this place.

Welcome to the forum. I will say, I own a 2.5T GV80 and it has more than enough power to get around. Especially when you put it in Sport Mode. The GV70 should be fun with the 2.5T.

As for leather options, I would select the one that appeals the most to you. My GV80 has the ambient lighting and I do like that. I did not get the Nappa leather seating. It is only available with the 3.5TT option here in the US.

Welcome aboard! And thank you for signing up. And for your support! That's greatly appreciated... I think the choice you've got to make may mainly depend on whether or not you like carbon fiber... Now I will say... I DO LOVE nice leather! My heart would tell me to go for the Nappa leather. However, my brain would tell me to avoid the upgrade. The standard leather is also nice and I don't think you're really going to feel much difference other than the first few times you feel it with your hand before getting in. I mean, for the most part, it's going to be the back of your pants feeling it moving forward. :p

In any event, the GV70 will be a really nice upgrade over the Toyota Rav4 - which is also a nice vehicle. Are there many Genesis owners in China?

My wife (who is skeptical of this buy from a city ten hours drive away thing) found someone online who said that Genesis only sold 1,000 cars in China last year. I think that the number is somewhat higher than that, but I won't pretend that they are everywhere. Breaking into the China luxury car market is no easy thing to do, and Genesis only has 18 dealerships so far. But with most car companies charging massive premiums in China (ahem BMW, Mercedes) or selling cars with much lower power than their western equivalents (ahem Volvo), Genesis represents a great value proposition here. On what they do sell, there is zero compromise on features and power, and prices are even a bit lower than the west.

I will definitely upgrade seats. My better half has little spare padding and comfort is key on our long driving trips. (This is a beautiful part of the world, with good highways.) So mesh inserts is not an option. And yes, I do like carbon fiber! I came across this picture on Car & Driver of the 2022 GV70 interior, when suede was still offered stateside. Remove the red to get a straight Obsidian Black interior, it looks perfect to me. It would match nicely with a Matterhorn White matt exterior. This is still the stuff of dreams, but not for so long.

Thanks for the welcome.

I do hope the Genesis dealerships there do a good job building a great reputation - even though the closest one is so far away. But the better they do, the more dealerships will be built. Now as far as seat softness, I don't believe there's any difference as far as the actual padding beneath the leather goes. I could be mistaken, but if not, it's only the suppleness of the leather that's different. And if that's the case, you're only going to notice that difference when you run your hand over it... I do intend on seeing that corner of the world in the not too distant future.

There are not a lot of people coming to China these days. There are never many coming to the southwest. It is worth a visit. Welcome.

We plan to do a driving trip to Chengdu over Chinese New Year. That is a major city out here. They have a Genesis Studio, i.e. branding center, which has such accruements as displays of car doors in different colors. Hopefully that means that I can also try out different seats. I plan to do another test drive there, this time with my better half. I hope she likes it. She is certainly going to ask all the difficult questions that I apparently forgot to ask in Chongqing, such as how we get remote emergency/accident service, warrantee service outside of scheduled maintenance, etc. All part of the building momentum process...

Why do you think that is? What has changed?

Chengdu, that really is far out north west. I bet it's nice there. Rural. I'm sure I'll pop in there some day. :p
