  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a burning like smell coming from what I believe is behind my dash. I have checked fuse box, heating, lighting, in dash navigation screen, back up camera, cabin filter, under hood, trunk everything I can think of and all systems work. There are no codes showing either. I have checked for random items that may have gone bad but nothing. The car drives and performs fine. I am at a loss as to what this can be. Has anyone experienced this before?

Do you only smell it from the dash or can you smell it from the vents?

Most common odor is mold or gunk on the AC evap coil. There are sprays you put in the outside vent to help clean it.

It does not seem to be coming from the vents. The car was not even running when I noticed it. The car had been parked for 3 days prior to noticing the smell after entering it. I aired it out for several minutes while driving and now 2 days later it is still there and has not diminished at all. I park in an underground and there is no smell in the air down there. I turned on the heat while driving and it did not come from there. Thank you for your response

I'm not familiar with that model Genny - but EdP has a good suggestion. You might also check to see if the car has a cabin/pollen filter (most cars built since 2000 do..) and see if it's crapped up. They should be changed annually if not more often.

Thank you but I have checked the cabin filter and it is fine

Or a dead mouse (or lots of mouse pee and poop), but that would have a different smell.

Thanks for your reply it does not smell like rodent activity and there is no evidence of mouse poop at all. I park in underground that has no mice activity. Smells more like burned electrical wire but everything works fine and no smoke or damage that I can see. It smells more in the front so that's why I thinks it's behind the dash.. very confusing.

Is the smell only in the interior, or can you smell it under the hood?

Yes, could it be related to the solenoid or the turbo oil line recalls? Both are for fire 😲

How many miles or km on the car, and what year is it?

Only in the interior! Thanks for your reply

I noticed a similar burning like smell only during with my G80 with 3k miles. Started about a week ago when the weather warmed up.

Sorry to hear that, did it go away?

Its still there. Not sure what it is but it only smells at the initial startup then goes away after a few minutes of driving.
