  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Looks like it’s time to replace my 2011 Genesis 4.6L Sedan (123k miles), as I was given an estimate of $7,640.38 to replace the Catalytic Converters, and the car won’t pass an emissions inspection. Transmission work is a future potential issue on this car as well.

I could always attempt to trade it in for something else and the junkyard is also a worst-case future option, But I’m wondering if there are any other options that I may have overlooked, so I’m searching for ideas.

BTW, I had excellent overall service from the car until approximately 99k miles with nothing but routine maintenance required. Since that time I’ve had to replace the alternator ($971.00), Evaporator Purge Valve ($501.00), and replace the crank sensor ($542.00). Even worse, none of these issues gave me more than a few weeks advance notice. I'm now very concerned about throwing good money after bad with this car.

Any additional ideas would be appreciated.

Secondary market (CoPart etc.) & just buy a used set would be my approach on a car that old.

I would at least investigate what Fast Cars suggested but would still not spend a lot if you anticipate transmission work needed. Trade is an easy way out, but I'd avoid private sale unless the buyer was aware of the potential emissions failure.

I am just curious why the evap valve and crank sensor were so expensive? Those are super cheap parts and easy to replace. I did my crank sensor for about $30 and half hour of my time. Also, seems like over $7k for cats is way too much. Aftermarket cats are are $400-600 or maybe $700-1k for the manifold cats. Replacing all 4 shouldn't be more than $3k in parts. That means over $4k in labor? Seems like whatever shop you use is over charging.

Indeed. A purge valve is about $40 wholesale, $80 retail and takes 5 minutes to DIY with a 10mm socket, a trim tool and a pair of pliers. Purge valves are one of the easiest things to DIY diagnose: If you can blow or suck air through it, it's bad. Did one on my '12 silver 4.6 last year at 97k mi. Don't forget to transfer the rubber shroud. A sales price of $500 for this service results in a $400 gross margin for the selling party. A lot of dealers are now overcharging so much they really are taking advantage of people.

Alternators can be a PITA to do on this car so $1k for an OEM replacement is on the high side but still reasonable for a dealer, IMO. Haven't done a crank sensor yet.

The market for cats is way overpriced IMO due to high demand from a) theft problems in some cities, and b) people holding onto their cars for 10+ years. And a lot of aftermarket cheap cats are garbage and fail again within months. I agree that copart and similar ebay parts sellers is a very good place to start shopping. As long as your car is not running rich, then by the time the replacement wears out there will be plenty more other things needing $ work down the road (suspension, transmission, etc.) driving the keep/toss decision. Puns intended

You can get a full set of Magnaflow cats for about $3k.

Hello,

I have some aftermarket AP exhaust catalytic converters that I am selling 1000 for both left and right. I own a meineke muffler car repair shop and the they were overstock. Do you still need these catalytic converters? Located in Sterling, VA
