Overheat while parked with A/C on

Interesting... I was parked at a restaurant waiting for it to open with the A/C on in 82 degree (f) weather when the car popped up a warning about overheating after about 10 mins. Have any of you folks in the south seen that happen? My '25 GV80 3.5TT only has about 650 miles on it but we haven't had these temps yet since I bought it. My '16 Yukon Denali could idle parked for hours in hot weather with that big fan up front. I have yet to check the coolant as we just got back but I can't imagine that is over doing it. I assume they test these things in crazy climates like the big three do but who knows.

Don't know about your model, some have an electric fan that kicks on at a certain temperature. Maybe yours is not working.

With various cars, I've idled longer in higher temperatures. I'd get it checked out at some point.

It should not overheat in those circumstances. Check the coolant level and get to the dealer.

I was watching the temp guage while it happened because the A/C was blowing warm and I was wondering if its A/C is just weaker than my old Denali. In hindsight, I don't recall hearing the radiator fan running but can't confirm. I'll check things out and call. Unfortunatley I'm 100 miles away from the dealer but at least they come pick it up and leave a loaner. Not sure if they flatbed it back. Not really excited about someone driving 200 miles round trip for that service but it's what I signed up for with their concierge service I guess.

No, it has plenty of capacity. I've often sat in bright July sun at 95 degrees and remained very cool. Temp gauge never went above normal.

Was the system in AUTO? It is very easy to turn off the AC Compressor, no knowing you have hit the AC button on the lower portion of the panel. The HVAC will continue to operate but the Compressor is off!

"Was the system in AUTO?" - I believe so. While I was sitting there watching the water temp, and noticing the vent air had turned warm, I hit the recycle air button to force it to pull inside air. Didn't help. My Denali almost always ran in recycle mode when it was warm out but the Genny was not in recycle mode, just AUTO 3. It was probably 30 seconds later when the overheat notice popped up and I shut it down. If i were to guess, I'd guess the fan was not turning on as EdP mentioned but I do not know for sure. I'll call the dealer in the morning.

He was referencing the warm air from the A/C rather than the overheating issue. Together, it seems to point to the fan not running, imo.

Very possibly so, but also be aware that the engine computer cuts the AC off if the engine starts to overheat.

It shouldn't but if the compressor was on, it forces the fan on.

Hmmm, interesting. I did not know that, thanks! Btw, I was watching my temp guage the whole time and it popped the warning quite early. I'd say the guage was just a bit right of center, not too far from normal but still higher than I had noticed before.

Update: Spoke with the service manager. He pulled the VIN and there were no events listed in the system, so no real overheat event. Weird. Then he asked if I had turned the temp down to LOW on the A/C. I said no it was at 66 and the cabin was much warmer than that. He said I should try that to ensure the A/C remains cool. Not sure what AUTO is doing if not cooling until it reaches the requested temperature. Anyways, I am going to keep an eye on it and see what happens as it warms up this week.

Btw, today I drove with my OBD2 sensors up on my phone and the coolant levels would fluctuate between 210 and up to 232º when parked for a bit ata light. Told him that data but he didn't have any idea if that was normal or not.

Can you folks hear the cooling/radiator fan up front from inside the cabin when it turns on? I have yet to hear anything during my short drives today.

I never heard it. Only time I did hear it was after the car was shut off and it was hot and kicked on for a few minutes. Don't recall the ambient, but it was a warm Florida day, never heard it when I lived in CT.

Hello everyone. I saw a prior post about this topic but I never seemed to read about a resolution and I think im experiencing the same thing. When the car is in auto. climate; it sounds like a jet is taking off. As soon as I turn the auto climate off, the vehicles winds down and goes to a normal quiet idle sound.

What I wanted to know is if everyone experienced this; or is this behavior not typical?

I seriously doubt that the service guy checked your car for an overheating event. If you only received a warning that your car may overheat if you kept it on, does not mean that it did overheat, thus may not have set a code, or it was a temporary code, not a hard code, the dealer may not have been able to see that code if he actually check your car. Either way, an overheat code is serious. I would not drive it, have it towed to the nearest Genesis dealer. Now that you told the S.A. that your car may be overheating, and you keep driving, they won't cover any engine damage. But, your dealer results may vary.

Update: Car overheated again while at a pharmacy drive-thru. My scan tool showed water temps exceeding 255 degrees. Shut the car down until I could drive straight home. Just got the car back from the dealership. The fan was inop, as I presumed. Fuse was fine as was continuity but the fan could not be commanded on so they replaced it. Dealership is 110 miles away so they put it on a flatbed on the way out and concierged it back. I thought it was weird I hadn't ever heard the cooling fan but didn't know if it was just quiet, but now I know. Hopefully, nothing warped with the heat. Also, the connected services still does not show any concerns with the vehicles health nor that there was ever a problem.
